Hi all,
Just wondering what Technique works bestfrom a canoe/ kayak
for you eg trolling , bait , lure flicking ect.
The reason I'm asking is I am looking to get back into it

Cheers,
Dillon

Hi,

If your talking about breamming then lure casting would be best.

You could sneak up on them real well in a kayak.

trolling you would have to be pretty lucky and lures are fun than bait.

Good luck

I fish softplastics just as i would from the bank as i would from a yak.
I dont know of anyone that trolls for Bream but flathead yes.
Give it ago you never know!

I'm probably the odd one out, but trolling hard body lures close in to snags or around a calm bay is my preference for fishing from a yak. I guess this is because having a day on the water is 50% about a fish and 50% about a paddle and seeing what's around the next bend. Perch, flatties, tailor, salmon, snapper, trout, bream and even mullet jump on, as do plenty of weeds and sticks. From a purely fishing point of view it may not be the ants pants, but I end up with a feed mostly. Worth a try anyway!!

Ive tried a bit of both and have found that ( trolling vs casting) the results differ from river to river. Some places I cant get them to take a trolled lure but hit hard when cast right up into the snags where trolling would be impossible and vice versa where trolling seems to be the only way to get them. Little yo-zuri's work well trolled miles behind the canoe in shallowish, narrow creeks.

PoddyMULLET: dude i like ur style! :)

DLLION: i agree with matt with trolling vs casting. it can also cover more ground and therefore put u onto more fish. but its damn boring. casting lures into structure and actively angling is much more fun to me.

Ok some mixed styles,
what about trolling a lure behind and also casting amongst the snags at the same time?
Also how would you fit out a 14 ft canoe hull? with rod holders seats ect?

Trolling, but probably for different reasons to some of the younger blokes on this forum.

After 25 years of fishing from power boats I suddenly realised I was getting fatter and lazier.

So I sold the boat, cut back on the grog, bought a Kayak, and started "Kayakfishing" mostly by trolling and after 18 months I am a stone lighter and almost dangerous again.

I guess getting out once a week to places like Lake Samsonvale (where I usually paddle more than 10 K's during a 4 hour outing) helps get the fat burning, and the serenity of the area is great as there are usually only me and a couple of electric tinnies on the water.

For the record, recently my Bass on deep-diving hard body lures are working out at about 5 kilometres and 2 hours per fish.

Trolling's not as effective in the saltwater though where I mostly cast hard body lures or SP's for Bream and Flathead.

Trawling man made structure in a canoe with leccy is an absolute riot. If you are looking for that elusive double hook up, then get your bum and another bum in a canoe (take a cushion) and cruise right up along evry floating pontoon, crusty old boats and especially houseboats. As I prefer to fish without the use of space shuttle technology (sounders). Then I have to source were the bream are. It's effective both day and night. More often than not during midday, the bream are either down deep or in the shadows of the places previously mentioned.
cast your lure around 20 - 30 feet behind and trawl at a speed which feels right for you lure. Min mins are one our faves. The hum they create is reminiscent of certain marital aids.
Loosen your drag and palm the spool as this will solve bust offs from snags or hopefully monsters of the deep. Once you've had a few bumps and no hook ups, turn around repeat the process but slower. remeber to have the tip of your rod virtually touching the pontoon etc The fish will not venture far from their hidey holes.
Hold on tight cause they smak it with gusto.
You will find that you have saved yourself potentially hours of searching. The golden rule is cover as much ground as you can till you find where they are. When you find one there will be many more.
