View Full Version : Yamaha 30HP
Has anyone tried the Yamaha 30hp?
We are thinking of getting a new one for our boat. Trade in the Evinrude 15hp, as now that we have done all the modifications to the boat it is a little heavy.
We have had a price of $2900 for a brand new motor.
What do you think?

Mim,
What size boat have you got ?
12 and a half foot savage snipe.
We are taking it in to the dealers to make sure it will be ok with the 30. When we were on hols in Jurien we saw a slightly smaller boat than ours with a 30hp on it, and their boat had less weight.

I have a 14' Brooker that literally flew with a 15 on the back.
Now with bits and pieces, Minn Kota, seats, carpet , casting deck etc etc continually being added and tossing around the idea of a livewell the 15 is still fast but I do like to go fast:D
Out of interest whats the trade in on the 15?
I paid $2200 for my 15 so $2900 sounds good for a 30.
One other thing Yamaha motors seem to outnumber all others 3 to 1 here.
I dont have a compliance plate on my boat so I dont know what its rated for but like you I have seen smaller boats with HUGE outboards strapped to them.
We have all that, plus JP has just added a seat for steering the Minn Kota, as we have a cable steer. It is a Minn Kota AT36 with the really over engineered mount and it all adds to the weight. We can still get up on the plane, just, but that was before we added the seat. We haven't tried it with that yet, cos it isn't quite finished yet. Maybe tomorrow (Fingers crossed).
We are looking at around $1200-$1400 trade for our motor as it is about 6 years old.
I am not sure if all Yamaha dealers are offering this price, but the guy we went to ordered about 30 in, so he can offer them at that price. He said the 25hp are about $3400.

1400 trade-in and a purchase price of 2900
1500 for a brand new yammie 30.......that seems like an EXCELLANT deal.
Now you have got me all unsettled.....Thanks :( :(
No worries
Any time
If you were in Perth, you too could get this deal
Might even be worth shipping one east?
Mim
That works out at only $100 per horse.

Heya,
My dad just bought a new quinnie explorer with a 25hp Yamaha CV series (red and silver stripe). The cv is short for customer value..has a 2 year warranty..and all I can say is lucky it has.
My dads boat had been in the water twice and developed a top end noise as if the flywheel was goin to fly off.
He took it back and they replaced the powerhead 3 times...its still not fixed. Yamaha wont replace it..they are trying to work out what it is and then they will fix it...hope he dont break down 15 miles up the river, or yamaha will hear him yelling from coff's to sydney.
We also found out when we took it back in that they had 3 other motors there...the same CV series in 25's and 30's all making the same noise.
The Blue stripe series are a great motor though.
Cheers

Thanks Ira, will do
So does this mean that you have a boat now? Is that why you were checking out prices?

The CV30 is the one we're looking at... I won't do it now. I'll settle for what I have.
thanks Simmo
I have the Yammie 30cv and have had no problems with it at all and believe me it has been given a good work out lately.
Simmo sorry to hear that you have had a bad run with it. Did you make sure that you broke it in and diddnt just start "Fangin" it straight off. A few of us here (WA) have the 25 and 30 and dont seem to have any complaints. Maybe just a bad batch going through the workshop??

Heya Craig,
We where 10 feet from the ramp and doing less than planing speed when it started the rattle.
I also mentioned that the dealer had 3 other motors all doing the same thing as my dads.
Hehe and he sold boats for 20years and has 17 boats in those so he isnt a twit when it comes to running a boat in.
It may have just been a batch that got through QC, but yes..we where unlucky.
It is my dads 9th Yamaha and NONE of them have ever given trouble before...we love them.
I didnt post in to bag Yamaha, I was just relaying and experience we had with 1 model.
Cheers,
Simmo

motorcycle that is! both on & off road. I was never that keen on them once I rode something better like a Kawazaki & KTM. Some models would always have a weakness but then every mechanical device has a weakness regardless of how well they are engineered. I'm impressed with Yamaha 4 stroke technology because they were the 1st to really define the limits in GP and Moto-X before Honda and everyone has been playing catch them if you can ever since.
Mim and I will work something out
ps: I'm editing at home and added 2 pics to the posting below Geoff

Hey john and Mim,
The blue stripe motor has twin carbies and is sposed to be a more souped up model, I would go that way for sure. My 25 cv has given me no troubles so far, I just wish I had a bigger donk now. I was going to go the blue stripe motor, I guess I got talked into a cv for economy reason's.
There are a lot of yammie's out there, they are definately one of the more popular motors out there.

Got sick of Team politics so go Euro and get real Factory Support

Hi Ira,
I called Millards and they do not stock Mercury. Only Yamaha. So I did some phoning around and no one can match the price on the Yamaha30hp CV.
Challenge even suggested that I snap it up as he thinks that would be at or below cost and for the money we could not do better.
So it looks like Access Marine here we come

Just to ad a few more:
Dinghy World
Tohatsu
25hp - 2870
30hp - 2910
Honda
25hp - 4480
30hp - 4820
Straight price, haven't beaten them down yet.
Interesting price differences.
Hey Sean,
Do you know much about the Tohatsu?
Craig,
Millards couldnt beat the price of Access, only match it, so buying 5 mins from home is better

I don't know much about any motors in particular but I reckon in todays market place all motors would be good. Let's face it if you make a crap product people will hear about it and not buy it.
I reckon with the way technology is these days all motors would be reasonably equal and I don't think there is any motor to stear clear of.

Mim.
Tohatsu make a lot of outboards for Mercury, in the smaller 2 strokes, so do for that matter Yamaha. I believe most of the Merc 4 strokes are Yamaha's with a black paint job. Check out the 'new' 225hp 4 stroke offering from Merc. looks suspiciously like a Yamaha to me.

We got the 30hp CV Yamaha and it goes a treat. We had to run it in down at Walpole and it certainly rocks after 2 tanks of fuel. In the calm water with 2 Breamers it just belts, like powering up a Ski boat. The grunt is really good in rough water as well to get outta the way of the swells or pushing up onto a plane. The 15 hp was just never capable of that. I also notice that it is a quieter motor than I expected. Not bad for a two stroke.

Whats the fuel consumption for the 30 compared with the 15...is it double?

06-02-2003, 08:19 PM
Hi LCF
the 15 hp was always running at a higher throttle setting than the 30 hp and well the 15 hp was 8 years old so not as fuel efficient. Still a very new motor being run in and my guess is that it will use around the same amout of fuel because it uses a lot less throttle to do the same job. Very limited chance of running faster than 8 knots because 90% of the bream fishing we do is in 8 knot zones.
Hey JP, do you still ride mate. I've got to agree with you mate, team green and the mighty Kaites are awesome.
I'm going to buy a YZ250F this winter, hopefully my leg will be fixed by then! Nice pics by the way, how'd you go on the MotoX track on those big enduro bikes!:D

Hi Dave
I haven't ridden Enduros this century... haha! says JP . I used to ride as an Expert mainly KDX 200's and KX125's with lights ( road registered ) then when I got sick of Team politics I moved to KTM riding a XC 125 which took me onto real factory support with exotic stuff like Marzzochi Forks, Whitepower and Ohlins shocks.
I tell you the 250cc MX boys used to get upset when we beat them on 200cc Enduro bikes.
In the end I stopped because of knee problems and raced Jet Skis then onto Windsurfing.
Nowadays I dream of getting another bike and really think a KTM 250 Fourstroke would be the go. Just can't help myself, rev em' 'til they drop. Mainly Breaming for me now and the little boat just belts along with 30 hp
