Collie River Bream

I am fairly new to the sport and am dying to get my first Blackie on a lure. I want to get one in the Collie River as I live in Eaton and the Collie is only a few minutes drive away. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how far down the bream are or am I better off going to the Capel River or possibly the Preston River. Any spots (just a general area, I don't want you to tell your fave place) would be greatly appreciated. But the areas have to be land based as I am 13 years old and won't own a boat for a few more years.

Mate as you may of read I just got back from Walpole, and I even passed over the Collie river when I went down there.
I went over a traffic bridge on the road that goes to Perth that crosses over the Collie River, have you tried there?
Any thing like an Atomic, Crappie Spider, Eco-gear or your squidgies should work there, my favourite at the moment is any Oar-gee hard body lure!. Even they will work as you cast by the Pylon and do a slowwwwww retrieve. Failing that ( it may be too close to the INlet) Bream this time of year will swim right up river, even into the fresh water. Look for bends in the river and fish the long side of the bend if you know what I mean. Hard bodied lures will do wonders in snags and drop off's.

Hi Chris, I live in Bunno and have fished the collie many a time I am also new to lures for bream but it is great fun. Only ever caught a couple of bream from the bypass bridge in the collie river. I have tried the elbow a few times (plenty of tailor this time of year) but the main thing is to get out and give it a go:)

Depending on where you live a would give the bridge, scout hall, elbow and just try going along the shore and casting this time of year the bream are usually well upriver but there is basically not alot of driveable/walkable spots. The main thing is to get out there and when you catch your first bream you will be hooked :) I know I was.
ps. Did you have a letter in modern fishing a few months back??

So do I only retrieve just quick enough for the soft plastic tail to swim. Unfortunately I don't have any hard bodies because on my budget they seem a bit pricey, I can buy one HB for the same price as 20+ SP.

Yeah that was my letter in modern fishing.
One of these days before school starts again I'll go to the scout hall as that is only 3-4 minutes away. Or I could go to the elbow, last year my brothers (bait soakers) got some nice bream from there.

Yeah I have only tried there once and went walking down the track downriver but only pulled a couple of tailor. Have heard many reports of large bream in preston but I have NEVER talked to anyone personally about catching bream there. It is that small a river that bet it has been netted. My mate and I have seen ppl netting it after dark (this was about 2-3 years ago and before I realized the great evil of netting).

Good luck ChrisN, if you dont have any sp's yet I recommend getting some pumkinseed & muscadine sliders(just checked out the new range and the sour grape does look nice) as basics using 1/16 jigheads to learn then move done to 1/32 jigheads. Atomic 2" fat grubs are also worth a mention (amber, motor oil and crawdad) There has been plenty posted about what are the fav colours so just have a search around the forum:)

I have no need to worry about soft plastics!
I bought some with Chrissy money and got some as gifts. I have pumpkinseed&muscy sliders, Crawdad& motor oil fat grubs, pumpkin/chautreuse& avocado atomic paddles and pumpkin and watermelon bassmaster grubs. As for jigheads I have 1/16 gamas and bassmasters, 1.5,2&3 gram squidgy heads. The only thing I need to get is a graphite rod(I'm using a shimano technium 7').

Well u have definetly got the right stuff. Be prepared to lose some rigs though so dont use your good gama's to strat with. There is probly half the national forest in the collie river so its very snaggy. If you still have any chrissy money left over maybe invest in a new rod (warrens penns would be very nice) or maybe a new reel or some new line or some new sp's or some hard bodies or a boat or a.........................................
