Hi,
I have 2 knot questions if someone can answer them please.
1. When using HB's and tying on with a lure knot how close or far away do I pull the knot to the eye?
2. Using SP's do I just tie a blood knot straight up tight to the hooks eye?
Thanks,

Jim, I favour keeping that lure knot down to a quite small loop, say something less than 10mm. If they get much bigger than that they tend to catch the trebles.
With the SP, just go hard down against the eye.

Thanks Craig,
I agree with you 10mm is enough for the lure to be free moving.
I asked my question as I have seen so many people with the knots as much as inches away and I think that this would be more visible to the fish, if your using a 6lb line and its doubled that much in my books isn't that like fishing with 12 lb line?
Craig one more question if I may, do you remove or keep on the split ring on the front (bib) of the lure? Again I have seen quite a few blokes remove the ring and tie a lure knot through the hole.
Thanks

Jim, I normally tie onto whatever is there, wouldnt bother to remove any split rings.
Having said that I know other people will take them off. I was talking to Rob Madaff the other day about Laser Pros and he not only took the ring off he substituted in the bib arrangement used on the Sneaky.
Sounds to me like its another situation for some personal experimentation.:)

Craig, sounds like a good excuse to get in the boat and hit the water;)
Thanks for your advice:)

Just a thought
With a split ring on the front eye of the lure couldn't you just tie a blood knot to the ring. Because then the lure could wobble around on the ring. I'm not sure if that is correct or not because I'm new to lure fishing.

I use a loop even on the Sp's, at first my loop was about 30mm or so and sometimes the tail would catch up in the loop, now I snug the loop down to about 15-20mm. I tried tieing them on just with a blood knot, but found the swimming speed rose, that is, you had to pull them a little bit faster for the lure to wriggle nicely.
So after seeing that I went back to using a small loop. This was with small jig heads like 1/16th and 1/32th ounce and small grub type tails. Larger heads and tails would be less affected I think.
I think that long loops must be more visible to the fish, I'd prefer no loop if it didn't hamper the swimming action and realism ofthe lures.

Chris,
That sure is food for thought, the ring will wobble won't it?

Hello Jim,
I use a variant of the "Perfection Loop", I studied how to tie the perfection loop, but didn't practice it. Then I went fishing days later and tied what I remembered, unfortunately I remembered wrong. What I do does seem to work, but I must get out the Geoff Wilson CD and watch and practice so that I can do it properly.

hello peter
firstly with the hards.....10-20mm works fine...as others have said, any longer and the front treble can catch it resulting in a wasted cast and plenty of line twist when retrieved :(
secondly with the softs.....although the tail usually provides the action, a little more from the body cant hurt.
as for using a blood knot...i'd recommend against it. i lost countless trout to the blood knot. try the perfection loop or the 6 turn uni knot. they should be in geoff wilson book/cd...with the uni knot just add an extra turn or 2

G'Day Pete,
The uni knot I know well and Dave W gave me the web address for the Lure Knot (thanks Dave ! ). I'm not at all familiar with Perfection Knot and my ancient Dick Lewers book fails to have it so I'll do a Google search and hope to find it animated.

Jim, I think the lure knot & perfection loop might be the the same thing. I call it a PL but if the lure knot starts as a loop formed with a king of granny knot and then finished off with a blood knot, it is definitely the same.

Craig,
I think you may be right.
Heres the link that DaveW gave me.

That is similar, but different to what Geoff Wilson calls the perfection loop.
