Quick release plugs for Battery leads

Mounting a Min Kota on my boat and I want to put some quick release plugs on the battery leads so I can leave the battery in the boat for ease of charging. I seem to recall reading somewhere about these plugs but I can't locate the exact post. Can someone let me know the name of these please.

No sure exactly what kind of plugs you are after there bundy. Do you mean quick release clips for the battery terminals, or a plug that you wire inline and leave one end permanently screwed to the battery terminals?

Don't know about the former, but there are two main options that I've seen for inline plugs. You need a fairly high amperage plug for use with electrics, the 55lb Kota can pull up to 40 amps. Most of the standard marine ones are only rated to 5amp.

So the two option are - use a Minn Kota brand plug, if you can get one, or use what's known as an Anderson plug. These are a little easier to find and can handle high currents (see pic).

They are available at places like the 12v shop in Welshpool, or at most decent auto electrical stores. That's what I ended up using on my kota. You have to buy 2 of them (you only get 1 half in each box) if you want to connect two ends of cable together.

Either option is not cheap though, but then neither is an electric motor.

Do NOT use the Min Kota plug you can buy they are VERY dear and VERY flimsy.

Get the Anderson plugs as some one told you above. The ones about the size of a match Box and are rated to 50Amps heaps for your motor.

Auto lec's have them will charge you a fortune.

Try BLA it is not a part number but can get them through service department. I bought 2 the other day from a Tackle shop and they were $18 dollars each and this is with there little profit on as well. They are the best connection ,Better than the min Kota's will ever be. will not fail ,corrode,all fall apart.

Bundy, I've been cruising on this site and thought I'd add 2c here, we use a an electric winch to drag our longboat up the trailer. So as to keep things thief proof, we keep the power lead in the boat with us and the one to jump off and grab the ute takes the lead with him, we use heavy duty welding lead joiners that have rubber shrouds. When they're joined up they appear watertight . (oh yeah, we have a hardwired extension to the back of the ute). It seems to me that this might work with a leccy, I cant see that a Kota would draw too much more than a big welder, or a winch. Cheers. Craig.

Hi Bundy, well in complete contrast to Tony I use the Minn Kota plugs because I had a critical meltdown using the 50amp others, and it was running through a 40 amp fuse. One plug is on the motor and another is on the charger. All I do is unplug the motor and plug in the charger. In 18 months they haven't missed a beat, they get covered in salt water, rainwater and hosed, (now that I've just put the hex on myself). I think I got them from cabelas or basspro for about $25 ea.
