I just got a Daiwa Capricorn (3500) and am stoked with it. I really got it for salt water spinning 4-6kg but in the smaller sizes would suit a bream setup....I was going to get a Laguna for $180 but came across the Capricorn elsewhere for $199. The main difference being the beefy " Air bail " on the Capricorn . It's the first good quality reel I've bought and the first time I've used Fireline and so far it's awesome. Done a few hundred casts with metal slices mainly getting herring /tailor - I haven't had the bail arm problem that Ira mentioned somewhere in these forums. Am now feeling the need to get one in the 2000 size and a bream stick to suit even though the last black bream I caught was a long time ago in Kalbarri.....

hi

I suggest you look at some past threads.

Look at the Daiwa advertising - only the better models Capricorn and above I think, have the "braid friendly air - bail"

Several of us had problems with some models and Fireline - others say not.

Service dissatisfaction with Daiwa itself ( not retailers) has also been repoted too often - with both reels and recently a rod.

Its really useful haveing a second spool - I have 4lb and 6 lb loaded. Daiwa's come with2 reels but teh spare is of alesser grade ( eg plastic) So consider that when shopping

So I suggest that you check all the available alternatives before deciding.

Thats why i thought id ask about it. I want a spare spool for when theres bigger fish around and i need to put some taugher fireline on. I didnt know the extra spool was plastic! thats kinda a let down.:(
Alos did u say the Laguna IS fireline Friendly or the capricorn only?

Hi Dagga,

I have been using my Laguna for over 12 months and have not really had any problems with it. The bail arm is a little weak, but i always flick it over manually after I cast. It is a great little reel and nice and smooth.

Go to a shop and have a play with other reels for the sme price, I thought it felt good, so that's why I bought it, and I haven't looked back since

Cheers

Dagga

Last I looked only the Capricorn and TDS had teh " Braid friendly air bail"

... and those of us who had problems with Laguna and Kastor had a problem with fire line not dropping into the roller and doing a few turns around the bail arm before you notice. One solution we tried was to just buy an air bail and retro fit it to our Hastor/ Laguna. At least one person says he was refused by Daiwa.

Then again, others had no problem.

Yes Daiwa consistently has an A spool and a B spool in theor 2 spool offerings. so when you are comparing prices allow aboy $30 to get another A grade spool.

THe Capricorn comes with two aluminium spools, on has a gold anodized lip and the other is plain aluminium. The 3500 I bought was reduced from $289 to $199 making it $20 more than the Laguna I nearly bought. The other sizes were not discounted..
There are a few Daiwa models that have the reverse tapered spool but with a std type bail arm , some are more braid friendly than others you could say....Dagga you could shop for the optimum Bream reel or something suited to the various possibilities that you mentioned - sounds like that's two different reels ? I say buy what you can use the most while you are limited to one Good reel . It should last a long time and eventually you can get one or two more to fully cover what you want to do. Take your time and shop around.......

the laguna comes with an extra METAL spool. i just got one in the 4000 size and i rocks. i have 8lb braid on one spool and 14lb on the other and i catch snapper and BIG trevaky and it handles great. i picked up mine for only $130 and is worth the money.
the reason i got it was for the extra spoll now i wont get a reel unless it has an extra spool.

I think you will find that, across the range, the second spool is of a lower grade - usually it is the same as the premier spool that comes with the lower model.

so you always get an A and a B ( lower grade) Spool As Sam Walker writes - one spool was gold ( titanium lipped?) and the other plain.

Go to your tackle store get all the models out - and their spools and you will see what I mean.

Where as my Shimano came with two identical spools.
Shimano's approach seems more " honest" to me.
