Visiting Southern NSW and VIC!

Hey all,

I'm lucky enough to be travelling down the South coast of NSW for our honeymoon in early May. We'll be on the road for around 3 weeks and at this stage we've only got 1 major stop and thats Mallacoota.

If you had 3 weeks to travel and were towing a boat where would you stay and for how long? It's going to be a fishing trip but with a fair bit of non fishing activities included - what would be some interesting places to visit?

Even a rough selection of locations to visit would be really helpful, as then we can jot them down on a map, join the dots and work out our Itinerary.

We'd like to stop off at melbourne and check that out for a couple of days, if you can imagine a loop between sydney and melbourne that's going to be the main part our trip!

Can't help you much with places to stay but if I were you and heading up that way I'd be trying to hook up a charter with Stu Hindson. His charters look unreal.

Maybe Todd, I got a few mates down there that I'm sure wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction to find a few fish. Charter's are normally $$$ and I think the $$$ could be better spent elsewhere, but ya never know :)

you cant go wrong with Mallacoota, maybe look at stopping at St Georges Basin on the way...

Thats what I thought of doing, maybe going down the coast on the way down and then coming back the inland route on the way home.

Any good tourist attractions around coota' besides the fishin'?

The Bemm is supposed to be good fishing as well, i've never been though...

Hey Forsterfisho,

Along the way i'd probably give st goerges basin a shot and the Bega River further south.

You can't go past Wonboyn just south of Eden, always worth a fish for the usual suspects, some honker Bream and Dusky's in this system. Plenty of racks to fish as well. There is a very nice van park at Wonboyn but can not remember the name of it but just google it.

Wingan inlet is worth a shot as well after you hit Coota of course, very shallow throughout most of the system and some very good breaming to be had at times, once agian big bream are on the cards and some big flattie.

Next i would be hitting up Bemm Once again there is a park there that you can stay. Don't miss Bemm mate, if its big bruising Black Bream your after then Bemm is the place to be. You also have a good chance of finding some big bruising EP's as well.

Next would be Marlo, huge Bream if you can find them both blacks and yellows are on the cards. Ask at tackle store or some locals they may be able to put you onto some fish. Marlo can be a tough place if you have not fished it before but one of the best places to fish when you have a bit of knowledge of the area.

Next would be Gippy Lakes. Huge system, big Bream if you can find them, not always easy though;) big Dusky flathead and all the usual species.

If you hit all these places mate i would be shocked if you went home without catching a or a few PB Bream and Flattie. Not Tassie but as far as the mainland goes some of the Bream getting around these systems are not to far of Tassie, just harder to find in the bigger systems.

Mate I'm not totally sure about where exactly your planning on travelling, but the Hawkesbury system would be worth dropping in for a fish imo, even if its just a day. The racks have a lot of big bream and if you go through past comps you will notice some big bags pop-up quite often. Further upstream you have high chances of snagging both bass and ep's. Its also one of (if not) the most reliable systems to snag a jew in NSW (and sees its fair share of 30Kg+ beasts). Adjacent to the Hawkesbury is Pittwater which is a smaller system famous for its high population of kingfish amongst the moorings. Also, Broken Bay (where the Hawkesbury opens out to the ocean) can quite commonly be the scene for football field sized schools of surface feeding pelagics, especially in the coming months. Just a thought mate but if your going down the f3 there is actually a turn off for the brooklyn boat ramp so you can hardly miss it haha If you want further info I'm more than happy to disclose a few locations to give you a good days fishing. As I said, I'm not totally sure about exactly where you planning on travelling, this is just a thought :)

Thanks heaps for that, that was what I was exactly after! I'll probly be in contact closer to the date for a bit more info (Not ya favourite spots tho :) )

Cheers Squidgy, I'll probably get down the Hawkesbury for a fish either on the honeymoon or just socially anyway! To be honest I've only fished mainly around Pittwater and some spots around brooklyn. I've heard upriver can be awesome for Bass, surface breamin and EP's. I'll be in touch closer to the date to suss some stuff out, so cheers for that mate.

If I'm down there after the trip, I'll let you know and we might be able to catch up for a fish.

Keep the ideas and suggestions coming guys - I reckon I'm going to be pushing to fish all these spots in just 21 days!

Any favourite tourist attractions or eateries along the way or in the fishing locations mentioned?

Mate, again I'm not too sure about where your planning on travelling but Heatherbrae's Pies near Hexam makes the best sausage roll I've ever tasted and a mean beef pie. Along with all the cakes and....ahhh its soooo good haha I've even seen Steve Starling in there hahahaha :D

No worries mate. Shoot me a pm closer to the date and i will help you out where i can. As for eateries Bemm has a great pub right on the water. Marlo has a great Pub right on the water, Coota has a good pub close to the water, Gippy Lakes has lots of pubs but a great pub right on the water at Metung;);).

Mainly pubs really, i don't really drink much by the way;) just some good Pub meals to be had. Metung is a bit more upmarket if that's your thing.

Seems though Bream Obsession has given you some excellent fishing local knowledge I will give you some touristy things you can do.


Genoa Peak walk commencing just south of Genoa Township has excellent views out to the coast past Coota.


Buchan caves worth a day trip past Nowa Nowa on the back road prior to Bruthen.

There are a couple of wineries near Lakes Entrance that might be nice for lunch or dinner and a sip as you are on your honey moon after all.

Rosedale bakery has a good reputation for baked stuff.

Lakes and Bairnsdale both have good golf courses if that's your thing.

You can turn off at Bruthen and head up into the high country going over Mount Hotham but it sounds as though time may be an issue there. It is a fantastic drive though through the other side to Bright and onto Wangaratta.

That side is full of wineries and gourmet food locations and quality B and B's.

There is heaps more but it kind of depends on exactly what you want to do when you're not fishing.

Either way you will have a great time and it is one of the most beautiful parts of the country including the NSW South Coast.

Gonna be a busy period, a few weeks down south, then a week relaxing on goldcoast beaches (Not quite sure why Kylie wants to go there.....we aready have awesome beaches :rolleyes:)

If you are passing through Ulladulla - This blokes pie shop is worth checking out - I was at a wedding he was flown down to cater and what he can do to food borders on witch-craft:).

I still wake up in a cold sweat some evenings craving a peking duck pie.
