Leader Setups

Hi everyone

Just wondering what dor of leader setups you are using.

I am using a #7 TFO rod 9ft a Penn Internation 2.5 (bit of overkill) a cortland #8 333ht intermediate. Currently i am using a X0 12ft leader and chop two foot of the end loop knot on the end and change the tippets at will.

Maybe i should go with a poly leader and loop it on at th fly line.

G'day Stuie,
I use a 7 weight Loomis Nautikos rod, Lamson LS3 reel, 8weight Rio Quickshooter Aqualux line. As for leader length...A lot of the breaming I do is around nasty snags and bridge pylons and such, I usually go for about 6 feet of 20lb Platypus Platinum. I recently got a hold of some Rio Flurocarbon, haven't really had a chance to evaluate it properly yet, but it does seem to knot quite well. If I'm fishing a spot that isn't quite so sharp and nasty I go up to around 9ft, 20lb through to 15or 12lb. I've played around with longer leaders, but they are a bit of a pain with the wind we have over here, plus I am normally using fairly heavily weighted flies so it helps to keep things pretty short.

Do you go stright through with the 20lb or tapered.
did you use loops on the end of the flyline.

Not sure if the fluro makes much difference the boat is still out for me anyway

With the 20lb I just go straight through, I've tried tapering it (40lb through to 20lb) but I'm pretty lazy hehe, seems to work ok as it is.
Yeah I don't know about flurocarbon, I've caught a bunch of nice bream using it and and plenty more without it, so who knows? My PB bream was caught using about 4 foot of 20lb Platinum, which is just about the total opposite of anything resembling finesse haha!

yeah im the same as duncan

when i was taught to swf fish it was up north and the guide just said to tie about a rod length of 40lb jinki for pelagics and run with that.- he said not to worry about tapering

i do the same when fishing for flatties and have never had a problem. although i use 8-12lb for them.

These days I'm using flurocarbon, I just run it straight through, no tapering and have been using 10lb, seems to work well for me.....

at the moment im fishing with a #8 RPLXI,striper intermediate #9 and tibor riptide and i use a prety basic set up of
3ft 60lb jinkai
3ft 20lb harro hard alloy
and a tippet anywhere from 4lb - 60lb or wire depending on the fish
i use a loop on to the flyline and join the sections with the improved albright knot which has never failed me

It seem most people are going for a short and simpler leaders. straight through on 20lb (ish).

Loop connections ?

Sounds more like barra 40lb down to 20lb get a 80lb leaders a pink thing and go for a large bream (barra):D :D :D :D
