How does berkley vanish campare to other flurocarbon leaders?? i just brought some 8lb for a heavier leader for around structure and boat moarings and im just wondering how it compares to the more expensive brands. for a cheaper leader i would expect a little difference in quality to the sunline im currently using but ill have to see how it goes! just want some feedback.
thanks (:

Which Berkly Vanish are you talking about.
There is a Berkley Vanish usually in 250yd spools for around $20 that is flourocarbon fishing line. It is ment to be used as main line if you are fishing flouro straight though. I use this as cheap leader for the kids and have had no problems with it.
There is a Berkley Vanish flourocarbon leader which comes in a 50yd spool for around $20 that is specifically a leader. Flouro Leader usually has a harder outer coating on the line to make them more abrasion resistant. I prefer to use Sunline FC Rock.

I used to use vanish and it is okay for a cheap line but does not compare to fc rock IMO. Just stay clear of the sensei stuff, its horrible. I still keep some vanish spare for when I run out of sunline.

I have used 10lb in the 250m spool as leader for years with no problems. It loves a slim beauty knot. I got some fc rock for xmas and have a little more confidence in it. Vanish is on shelf at big w for 14 bucks. Its very supple and holds a good knot.

If you are fishing top water you want to be using mono rather than fluro because as you have picked up it sinks.

Yeh, I saw some 4lb Vanish in Big W aswell for $15 and since it came in a big spool I thought what the hell and just grabbed it as the price was right. I;ll have to say thought that 4lb vanish has got to be one of the weakest lines I have ever experienced when it comes to making a strong knot. Okay so I i've tried the slimbeauty, improved albright, kaneit, double uni, 5 turn surgeon and the twisted leader knot. All of which were tied against 10lb Castaway and every single knot I could brake with my hands. On closer inspections with the knots I would always find that the braid would still be intact and it was always the mono that broke. I prefer to use 4lb FC Rock and have tried all of the knots listed above with it and have never been able to break the knot with my hands, also the good abrasion resistance with the sunline makes it for me a far superior leader.

i fish with fluro all the time with fc rock an never had a problem tried my mates vanish an found it pretty hard to wtd without it sinkin when you paused it
I stopped using it ages ago. Weak as
Cost me few fish and lures. Wouldn't touch it even if it was in the "The cheapest" bin...
Evidently cheap for a reason. I have used it a bit fishing for golden trevally in 12lb but with a very forgiving drag setting. Very heart in mouth stuff lol

never really had a problem with it, other then its P!ss poor abrasion resistance.. admittedly i now use FC rock but mainly for the increased abrasion... I have landed a few decent bream using vanish and tons of rats.. good for a starting point

It's only 4lb if you can't break it in you hand Id be hitting the gym lol. Your rod and drag should do the work to stop the knot from breaking.

Toray do a good leader I'm using this in 17lb for heavier applications at the moment and it comes in a lot cheaper than the V hard and a bit more supple.

Used it for years mainly in freshwater, no problems. The sinking of the line referred to by others I see as an advantage, especially when using rapala cd lures. If I found it for $15 then I would by some more. The Sunline fc rock is a very good line though, pending your lure/fishing applications

I am now using 8lb fc rock instead of using 10lb vanish with more success and more confidence. Im not bagging vanish as I have usedit for years with no dramas, there is just better products out there.

I use 6lb and 8lb vanish in the 250 yard spools are leader line and I'm pretty happy with it. There are better leaders out there but for about $15 a spool you can't really complain.

You can complain when that $15 turns into $100 or more worth of lost lures;) spend a bit extra on better quality line and you save money in the long run.

I got a dodgy batch of Vanish. It cost me a lure and I've never gone back. Get some Unitika Silver Thread FC. It's awesome stuff and at $30 for 150m you will never use cheaper stuff again.

Terminal gear is the business end of sport fishing .. with light lines and finesse techniques it pays to put a few more $$$ into quality leaders and jig heads / trebles .. when the proverbial "fish of a lifetime" hits I want the best chance to stay connected .. FC Rock .. rocks! And I've saving for some Unitika:D

I'v been using Yamatoyo pro line Fluorocarbon and it's great stuff. Any idea how it compares to FC Rock? as most people seem use the rock over everything else. I'm not a fan of Vanish.

Hey Swan_rookie
If you fish the swan like me let me recommend some brands that i have used with great results.
Nitlon DFC - 6lb, 10lb
Yamatoyo Harris Fighter 4lb
I recently tried the 4lb harris fighter and god damn its good! I just came back from a sesh on the swan landed a stunning black bream on the 4lb must have cast the lure on his head literally cause before i could even wind the handle he grabbed the lure. The line was soo light i could literally hear it squealing under the strain.
I have used berkley vanish and dont like it at all it just stretches too much for me... I have two spools of it in my bag as back up and maybe for tailor and other fish.
Also another great thing about the harris fighter is the low diameter in the 4lb range it just flies past the guides. Can be annoying to tie cause its so fine but top quality. You can get it from DohDohDoh as well but i would shop online or through a tackle store to get it cheaper.

If you want something a bit cheaper try the new Shimano high power leader.$20 for 150m and it's a lot better then Vanish. I just got some 4lb to test in the last few days and it seems pretty good.

Vanish = Yuk. Stiff, crappy stuff with not particularly good abrasion resistance. Go tailor fishing with a few different types, that will soon show you which leader lasts!

If you want to fish with toy lines use some cotton!! [Sorry i couldn't resit it]
If you really want sport, use a reel with out a drag system and 2lb line.Maybe even a hand line, then see what brand is better and how good
you really are.

[Sorry this was too good to pass up] lol
never used the vanish leader coz it costs too much
so instead, i have used 6lb vanish main line as leader and have caught lots of fish and continue to do so, but have moved on to 5lb FC rock for "fluoro bling", if you call it that.
in other words, i wouldn't hesitate to use vanish mainline as leader, but can't comment on the ones sold in small spools as leader material

Yep in the same boat, all my FC is Vanish main line used as leader, and have had no issues at all with it in my while time using it.
I think all the people here are just over reacting and thinking that quality has to cost alot more like using FC Rock - never used it and never will for what it costs...

FC Rock leader is only slightly more than Vanish leader and you get a heap more for it;) I do see where you coming from though, $ does not always equal quality that i do agree with 100%
I personally would not use vanish main line as leader, i have done in the past when i have run out of leader and it has not gone to well, especially around muscle encrusted Pylons.

IMHO vanish main line as leader is OK for flathead but when it comes to bream its FC rock all the way.
It might be just a confidence thing but when I'm on the water if I don't feel right using it, it don't get used.
