shallow water

Hi guys I have been recently been to claremont off the jetty at night time and have noticed that people on the jetty are fishing only a couple of metres from shore which is ankle deep and were quite succesful for catching some flathead, a couple of flounder, whiting and even bream. Is this how everyone else fishes on this web site.

Fish are found in a particular place for two reasons, Food and / or shelter. You may find that there was a light over that part of the jetty which attracted small fish, and the larger fish came in for a feed!!!

when i fish aroound jettys or pontoons i manily try and work the lure or bait into the pilons or under pontoons as this is where the fish will be. look particuley in the sheaded areas as i have noticed a lot of bream stay in the shaded areas.

Most of my fishing is done in deeper water, but fishing the shallows and gragging back to the drop off's is a good method for Bream.

Yea that shallow area is usually a good spot for flatties as the sand flats + the light attracts most of the fish. On calm nights the water there is crystal clear and dead flat and is usually fun to sight cast to unweary flatties that you can just make out. I find though however the flatties in that area are on average quite small, but down the deeper end in the corner of the T shaped junction thingo there are bigger fish, just fewer of them.

On calm nights there are also some bream swimming around in the shallow sand flats but they are reaally small. Maybe around 20 cm but its interesting to watch their behaviour...

but I suggest you fish the deeper end as the fish you get there are of better quality and there are a few surprises lurking down there...:cool:

I have caught bream and flathead in very deep water 9+ meters and have also caught bream on nipper beds when the fishes top fin was protruding from the water.

If your bait fishing for bream a good tactic is to fish shallower and closer to shore as it gets darker.

Definately had more success at night closer to banks etc in shallower water, they come in to feed and given the right tide, can be an hour or two of fun on light gear !:cool:

I would say the run in is better, the fish seem to come into the shallows to feed as the water covers the banks. Sort of like a smorgassboard meal :)
