Fireline Lifespan?

Hi,

I've read before of people turning their fireline over end to end on their spools to lengthen the life of the line. Just how long is the lifespan of fireline and how do you know when its getting old?

lifespan really depends on how much you use your fireline. you know that fireline is getting old when the colour really begins to fade. this is when you generally "turn" your line over if you want.

some people prefer the line like this as it is really limp. i dont as it generally becomes frayed. i have read some where that it doesnt matter if the line is frayed as the line still retains its breaking strain - but im not sure that this is true????

i have had reels that ive had to change my line every year- but have had others that have lasted me 3 years so far.

Evan, I've got nothing scientific on the fraying of fireline but it does seem to me that it remains relatively strong even when it does get a bit furry.

Evan, I heard that the fraying was caused by the colouring in the line coming off, and does not weaken the line. Apparently it is not possible to make any colouring permanently stick to fireline, so it comes off after a while. I've noticed this is worse on the smoke fireline.

yeah thats what ive heard - it still holds it breaking strain

Thanks for the feedback on the lifespan of fireline.

Does anyone else like the noise it makes when it goes through the rod eyes? I do !

Yeah I have always heard a kind of squeaky friction noise with fireline that I have never heard with mono.

(probably just the fireline cutting my rod eyes away :D , remember when the GSP's and Braids where new and that was the LATEST thing to worry about;) )

yeah i luv that noise and has anyone replaced rods yet or eyes from the braid cutting through i havent noticed anything yet.

I reckon that that was a lot of marketing hype put out when the braids first hit the market.
