Bream Lure Rigs

Im using RMG Scorpion 52's and usually just connect them straight to the main line, i think this is wrong is it?
What line is best for mainline for bream, and what is best for the leader line? how long does the leader have to be roughly? and do you connect them with a knot or do you use a swivel.

most guy's use 4 pound fireline in flame green(me included) as their mainline and then join a leader of about 1-2 metres of something like berkley vanish in 4 -10 pound (prolly 6 or 8 pound generally though). i use an albright knot to join my leader but u can also use an double uni knot.

i prefer the albright cos' i find it quicker to tie and stong, and also has a very slim pofile.

Yeah mate, welcome to the forum.

You'll find that fireline is the most common main line used in breaming. Because it's inherently very visible, and this is a plus, rather than a minus for the angler, you need to use a leader. Usually a rod length is a good guide, as it keeps the knot off the spool when you're casting. Some people use monofilament for their leaders, others use flurocarbon. Chacun a son gout, each to his own.

Almost no one uses swivels to join main line to leader, as usually your leader is longer than a foot or so, and as swivels don't travel through the guides on your rods too well, you can't cast with them on a good leader length. Some people use bimini twists, plaited doubles and the like. A good join that is very strong and also easy and quick to tie is the double uni knot, and it's quite popular. There are a variety of sites that have animated knots on the web.

Only thing I'll add to this is that it's a good idea to use a loop not to connect your leader a HB. You'll find that some can be easily upset as far as swimming goes and the loop knot allows it to swim freely.

I've had a knot that is straight to the HB go off-centre and put off the swimming action of the lure.

What loop knot do you use to attach your hard bodies to the leader bear? I find a lot of loop knots seem to be very weak?

Matt, I think most of us here are using Leftys Loop...least I think thats what its called.

Form an overhand loop, pass the tag through the jig then through the loop, few turns around the mainline then pass the tag back through the loop.

I think the problem we can have Matt is trying to tie just that one extra knot or try to test the knot too much. I've, maybe, lost 3 lures to knot failure and 2 of those were dodgy line as well.

The 41 I caught on the weekend would have tested anything, no probs at all. Good fun too :D

I don't have $25.95 to spend on line yet, but will 4 pound Berkley Vanish be alright for my mainline?
Plus you get 250 yards in vanish and only 125 in fireline, and i also got too start up my lure and plastics collection, might buy some today, so i gotta think on what i buy.

For a loop knot i use a "rapala" knot....
sort of a modified lefty with an extra loop back.

ive never had the knot break on me so, i have total confidence in it. :D

Don't worry, i went to Belmont Big W and got 4 pound fireline for a great price of $16.44! good deal.
I have some cheap Jarvis walker 6 pound as my backing, then fireline 4 pound, then for the leader, i couldn't find anything i wanted so im going to a store tomorow? any suggestions of weight? preferrably keep it under maybe $11-$12

In regards to loop knots, I've had so many break on me it's not funny. That knot doesn't seem to like me much :rolleyes:

I use a simple modified blood knot tied onto a Mustad fly clip and then attach my HB. I haven't had any hinderance to the swimming and action of any lure yet, and it certainly aids a quick change-over of color/lure...

I often look in bigW as sometimes they have real bargains.... ive never seen 4lb fireline though

they usually have fireline towrope for sale !! :D

Its a really good price right now.

Sir cast alot, as glib as it may sound, so its visible. Being able to see your line is an advantage in some situations. If your using the lift and drop method to retrieve your lure for eg, then sometimes your going to have slack line. By watching your line you can see if a bream has gently picked up your lure before you will feel it.

G'Day ppl, I doubt I would ever use the high vis fireline on bream although I think its great for ocean fishing. You should use what your confident.. Smoke is the only way for me:D
