Hi,
Im thinking about started to Fish off the beaches, in order to reduce the amount of snags i get, also its a bit of a different fishing environment.
Now, do i need to know anything in particular when fishing off beaches? how do i know where is the best place to look?
1- Can i use SP's on a jighead for fishing off the beaches?
2- Does is make a big difference if the SP is scented or not?
3- should i use real bait, such as Prawns?
Thanks.

Chopper, I have been experimenting using plastics off the beach, and have had some success. I have been using bigger jigheads and 85mm bloodworm squidgies. Trying to keep it on the bottom is a problem, and constantly changing jighead sizes is the key. Am going to experiment with different types of rigs soon. Even thought of using a standard light surf set up with plastics. Who knows

i have been fishing off beaches for a year or so now and i usually just use my bream gear and i find that the light jig heads that i use for bream do work but sometimes i go a bit heavier
i have caught tarwhine herring tailor flathead and sometimes i catch small school mulloway i have been meaning to up size the plastics jig heads and line weight and try for bigger mulloway and tailor though it all depends on how much fun you want to have flicking lures around

I can't see why our plastics wouldn't work fished on a hook on a paternoster surf rig. Salmon fishers commonly use a plastic whitebait or bluebait with good effect in the surf.
On a two dropper setup the bottom hook is usually baited with real bait like a whitebait or 1/2 pilchard and the plastic baitfish is put on the top hook.
Mulloway are another likely candidate for things like the big Storm weighted minnow softies or the larger Squidgy fish, etc.
In Victoria we don't normally get Bream in the surf (East Gippsland is the S/W limit of the Yellowfin Bream that appear in the surf), so you wouldn't be targetting them specifically around here.

I fish the surf with the exact same gear I use for breaming, only slightly heavier jig head around the 1/11 Mark. I figure so what if the jig gets ripped around by the current , hell most of my surf sinkers move anyway so how much difference is it going to make anyway. I've taken Mullet, Whiting and a whole host of what most would considerof "bait taking" species on small sliders and atmoics T-tails.

I use breamin gear, SPs & Hbs in the ocean &/or off the rocks. Have caught a variety of fish including herring, skippy and some small salmon. Cant wait to get a 4-5kg salmon on the bream gear. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and hold on

When u guys r talking about off the beach do u mean places where it get deep slowly and there isnt really any gutters or anything like that or do u mean places like where u can walk out on the flats?????
Any way im interested in fishing off the beach where it gets shallow slowly. say i could only cast into hip deep waters is this still ok to get fish like small salmon and bream or am i better off fishing off the pier where its deep?????

The areas of beach I normally fish with the bream gear is in areas where it goes fairly deep. Ususally when swells are low and conditions are good. I like walking out on the rocks looking for activity and chucking out the bream lures
I'm not chasin beam when i'm doing this, more true salt water species with the goal of a big salmon. I guess I'm just lazy, chose to fish with the lighter rod rather than the big beach rods plus i reckon its better fun:D

Im thinking of fishing Werribee from around the main pier up along the beach.
Off the beach would be fun to get some Salmon.
I love getting little Salmon on Bream gear its great fun!
