Line Changing

G'day

im a begginer, so help me out please:)

ok, i got a ryobi reel and its got either 12lb or 15 lb line on it. Yes i know its very heavy, and i only fish off shore, i bought it a while back, when i knew nothing about fishing.

I went fishing today, and all i get with this 12-15lb crap was all tangles and the damn thing is like steel wire.

Now, since the reel aint expensive, i was thinking to just cut off and get rid of the 12-15lb line and buy some 6 lb line as a replacement.

Now, i need to know, is it ok to use 6 lb line on a reel that the manufacturers have put 12-15 lb line on as default?

i dont wanna buy line, and it end up, its too light for the reel and it does not work.

you say the line is like steel wire...... thats called memory cos' as you say the line has been on the reel for months. Only makes sense that it falls off in continuous loops. you can go down to a lighter line like 8-10lb mono or lash out on some braid (Penn power braid), I think thats what it's called or Gelspun (Fireline) either way you say your inexperienced so monofilament may be a better/cheaper option. Mono has heaps of memory and can be a hassle where as braid/gelspun doesn't exibit those characteristics. The call is yours.... I'd say if your really goin' to get into it then go braid but if fishing once every 6 months stick to mono but go lighter.

thanks for your help.
So i cant go down to 6 lb? i think 8 is too much.
but if its safer using 8lb to ensure smooth action on the reel ill use it.

I dont wanna buy gelspun and braided lines as of yet cause my rods/reels suck.

I wanna just use light basic tackle, until i begin to find out where the fish are ( big ones ) in the areas i fish, and when i start catching a few ill invest in a 100-150 dollar rod/reel/line setup.

ok,

i just bought some Sufix Specialist Spin Fishing 6lb /300m line for $4.50.

and i attached it to my reel, all seems to work good.

I sometimes use 4 or 6lb platypus super 100 mono and i find it works well.

I used to use 6lb Platil Universal mono. Surprinsingly i still caught a lot of fish on it. Having said that...i know cant fish softies without braid.:rolleyes:
Josh McAlindon used to use 4lb Platypus Pre-Test as well. If you saw the area we fished with this light mono you'd nearly cry...nasty stuff indeed!
