My school is entering a newspaper competion in which our entry features in a two page spread in the Newcastle Herald. In total we are required to write half a dozen articles, an editorial and we are also required to include pictures to accompany the articles. I have been assigned 250 words to write about a fishing related event that is coming up soon. But there is a catch, it needs to be something people who live in Newcastle would be interested in and it also needs to include an interview.
So the first thing I though of was the boat show in Sydney and i was going to talk about how people would be travelling from newcastle to see this event etc. But then I found out about the tournament that accompanies this event and realised that bream tournaments might be something good to write about. With the boat show already receiving so much media attention already I though that I probably wouldn't have anything original to write about it and perhaps my piece of writing would be a bit boring. So.... since I have never actually seen anything about Bream tournaments in newspapers before I would be doing something new if I was to write an article on one.
So I went on the b.r.e.a.m site and looked for a tournament that would be suitable to write about and i found this guy:November 4-6th: Forster Daiwa bream Grand Final. Funny thing is I don't know much about bream tournaments other than the fact there is a weigh in afterwards. So, due to my complete lack of knowledge I ask that someone may be able to help me out with the following questions.
1. How significant is this event (being the grand final I am guessing its pretty important)?
2. What are the competitors competing for other than the title? Is the prize cash?
3. Is there anybody competing who lives/used to live at Newcastle, if so how would I go about arranging an interview?
4. If there is nobody from Newcastle competing is there anybody competing who used to live/lives around the Newcastle area, if so how would I go about arranging an interview?
5. If I can't find any newcastle people to interview, who else should I interview? Btw they would only be basic questions i would be asking nothing too tricky;)
Anyway I hope somebody out there can help!
P.S. If an over the phone interview isn't wanted I would be happy to send emails, it would probably be easier to quote people that way.

Why not write about the BETS Grand Final. $20,000 is first prize which I think is the highest prize money of any Bream tournaments and the weighin will be at Darling Harbour during the Sydney Boat Show.
It gives you a few angles for your article. If you need some info on this give seamonkey a PM.

Give me abt gf anyday, more prestigious than any teams event. Bets is a NSW based event, not national. Last years abt gf prizemoney was 10k for the winner, this year a Basscat boat. Most anglers outside of NSW wouldn't know who won bets but i'm sure could tell you who won abt. Big MH can tell you about both any way, he won bets last year too !

Yep, gotta agree. Maybe you could do a piece on both, what drives people to enter ABT and/ or teams events.
Teams events have grown enormously over the past couple of years, both BETS and GAMAKATSU series have fantasic prizes and growing numbers. The numbers in the ABT events have been on the decline this year.

talking to my teacher today, apparently we have to submit the articles to the newspaper in three weeks time. Which means bets and the boat shwo would be old news, so I will definantly base my article on the Daiwa grand final. Have sent a pm to big mh but unfortunately he hasn't been on the site recently to see it, so if anybody sees him maybe you could tell him to check his pm's:D;) Anyway, thanks for your help so far guys this forum truly is an invaluable resource.

Given its a NSW based paper (Newcastle) more than likely interested in the Sydney based event in conjunction of a boat show. Not sure how many VIC, Qld, SA or WA people going to read a Newcastle paper, either way its a paper with a limited angler base in NSW!
