View Full Version : electrics
Hi guys,
anyone knows where I can check out the Motorguides or the Minn Kotas in Perth? It's about time I get an electric motor. Cheers.
Yogi
Best 2 places I've seen for Minn Kotas are at BreamMaster and Dinghy World. Access Marine have the Cable Steer Minn Kota which is a gem.
I think Fremantle Yamaha have the Motor Guides.

Yogi, go and see the very lovely Vikki at Portside Marine if you want to look at a Motorguide.
breammaster for all your MinnKota needs!:D

Thanks guys,
anyone know if the motorguide can be fitted with a quick release bracket cos I park my boat in my front yard which is relatively easy to access.
Is the fitting of the Minn kota difficult? Are there any prefered spots on the bow to mount the motor? Cheers!

Yogi, fitting either is quite simple. Both of them have 4(?) bolts to hold them down.
Dont think the MG comes with a quick release bracket, the Kota definitely does for about another $100.
Positioning at the front isnt that critical, although its better to have the prop as central as possible. Have a look at some of the guys boats, you'll find that they have been mounted at all kinds of different angles.
Hi Craig,
thanks for the info. I'll go down and take a look at both the MG and MinnKota. If only the MG has a quick release bracket. :D

You don't really need the quick release, unless you want to take the mount off, you can still take the motor off quick and easy just buy unscrewing the knob. Which is great to wash it down and so no one knicks it.
Cheers

G'day Yogi,
The Motor Guides do have a quick release mount available.
It works pretty well to.....Skivv's had one on his...I'll find out the part number for ya today sometime, I think they cost around $100.

Hi Yogi
Mim & I have a 3.8m Dinghy and I tried the Minn Kota (MK) in 3 positions from the RH side of the keel to central. Now with a normal dinghy there is a lot of V in the hull. I found that if the MK was not in line with the V of the hull then when applying moderate power the boat will pitch quite rapidly and may catch yourself or non boater by surprise. I still have it mounted at an angle to maximise space but it drops in the water perpendicular to the nose and V of the hull. The flat punt or edgetracker/hornet type hulls are less affected by the mounted position.
Hoping this helps, photos attached

I had to make a small concession on having it dead centre when lowered otherwise I couldn't lower it once on the trailer. This photo shows exactly how close I got it

Kota's (RT55AP) are $1595 and the brackets are $100, we can get in any model that people are chasing too, By the way:p

Thanks again guys for the info and JP for the pics. If the MG can be taken off and mounted easily, I will seriously consider it as the price is more favourable. Anyone know exactly how much it will cost?
Can't wait to get it mounted and hopefully get into some of the mulloway on plastics action that our fellow breammers have experienced. Cheers:D
Yogi
How much were those cable steers Geoff??
G'day yogi,
I'm pretty sure skiv's cost him $130
I found a pic of it and some info at Merucury Marine (http://www.mercurymarine.com.au/mmweb.nsf/pages/accessory1)
Here's what it says
Removable Mount
Specially designed for fish-&-ski boats. Aluminium construction. Adapts to most trolling motors. Nylon stepcovers attach over mounting plates when motor is
removed.
07, 15, 16 mounts - MGA068X3
****
20, 20.5, 21 mounts - MGA092X1
****
23, 23.5 24 mounts - MGA093X1
If you get the MotorGuide model FW54FB (the one I think all the guys use that are using MG's) the model number you'd need is MGA068X3 because it's mount style is #16(breakaway)
Hope this helps
Hi Davo,
thanks for the info. Anyone who own the MGs got any feedbacks about them? I've been to the BM shop and had a look at the MinnKota also. Look pretty good.
Cheers!
Yogi.

I've a Motor Guide 46lb Salt Water series, its a transom mount but I'm happy with the way it performs, only had it for about 6 months but it seems to handle the conditions ok. Would love a bow mounted electric but as this was a gift from a few buddies I'm not complaining. The only worry I have is plastic fittings just not sure of the life span on these items ( eg the depth mount fitting, it has a stainless screw into a stainless nut but it clamps a plastic housing to the shaft.) But as with anything in the fishing arsenal it needs to be looked after and treated with some care.
Cheers
Gavin
Thanks for the replies guys, another thing I am interested in finding out is battery requirements. Can both the Minnkota and MG be power by a 12V battery? How long do they last on a typical not too big deep cycle battery (I know that's no such thing on typical but I just haven't been able to research on the batteries yet). I've seen the saltwater MGs on websites in the US, are they available here? Is that what most guys are using? Cheers!

Yogi, I'm using a freshwater MG as are most I think.
Also a 100amp battery should do fine, no matter what you go with. The bigger the better but.

rod that battery guy sounds like a real salesman, i mean hey its not like a battery has an instruction booklet or summin! hehe
why 'learn' on a average battery when a good one will be better anyway.
just my thoughts on it is all
