Surely with prawns the water quality and Swan habitat are crucial, but appear to be so poor that the locals moved out?

or maybe a change in the food web:confused:
blowies and bream now dominate what was once a "kingie" fishery?????

Kings seem to be ok but river prawns??????

Without doubt marron.

The state of the recreational fishery here in the SW is very poor compared to what it used to be.

Now for a rant.

The Margaret River has been a place that I have caught marron in since I was in nappies. Now I struggle to get three or four a year from there. The size of the marron have decreased greatly and I belive it has to do with this "hairy marron'' bulldust. All the years I fished up where you get these "hairy marron" I have never seen one. Nor has my father who has been marroning twice as long as me in the same spots. Now the river is closed from the dam upwards, the pressure on the lower reaches has been huge. At the end of the day its been how many years since the closure? How many years until we can get back there and fish for the "non hairy" marron? You cant say its going to be closed for good and the marron population wont regrow.

Rant over.

PS I get to miss the season this year due to work commitments. Lucky I can go and hit the farm dams but its not the same as fishing the river.

They don't give us much of a reason. Too much work for them to get their head around here. Not quite as forward thinking as our east coast counterparts.

Bass would be great and from my experience of catching Murray cod over east it would be pretty special to be able to catch them here too.

Swan River Prawn restocking might be a start followed by restocking of Mulloway and strict controls so they don't get fished out again!

Forget bass....it will never ever happen.
Apparently they pose too much risk to other local species.....
Plus access to water catchment dams doesn’t look like it will improve any time soon.

Some at DoF struggle with any stocking.....using the argument of genetics, biodiversity, tinkering with ecological balances etc
Check out the last page of the generally very good DoF Bream info sheet http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/FactSheets/Fisheries%20Fact%20Sheet%2014%20-%20Bream.pdf
They need to catch up with modern fisheries management and enhancement.

Agree with you Brad.....marron should be definitely. Heavily stock
the dams, reduce the size and increase the bag limit in productive waters like Harvey.

Marks point about prawns is spot on.....

And yet they still stock trout that eat frogs, marron and other species.

GLOOMIS ASKED,

local species?

Trout and Redfin?

Thats correct :)

Bass would be very nice, i know you can catch them on the outskirts of Perth but populations are small and locations are top secret.

derrr...

Trout stocking is partly paid from freshwater licences ......;):D

and Redfin are weeds

Put your energy into the achievable rather than the nire impossible;)

and Bass taste like mud:D

local species?

Trout and Redfin?

Nah.... pygmy perch, night fish, galaxias, western minnow.
Which are currently being considered for restocking into protected waters

DEC will never consider allowing the release of bass....
And Water Corp won’t let recreation on the dams; there has been a recent government enquiry which recommends the continuing support of protective quarantine.
Read the final report......:(
I cant find it on the web but I have a hard copy.....

Lets just say unless you are a mining company ......you can forget access to dams

Barra would be nice as well .

The Bass and Barra trails add millons to the economys in QLD and N.S.W, it could put some dying towns back on the map.

Trout stocking might be good but i guess the Redfin eat a lot of the little ones ?

Barra could only realisticly be stocked upwards of Exmouth due to barramundi requiring an annual water temp between 26 and 30 degrees celsius

No worrys i was thinking that if they have them down here (Golden Ponds, Mundijong ) they might go OK, maybe they heat the Barra ponds or something ?
