Hi All

As a direct result of finding and joing this site I have changed my whole fishing style. I was a surf jewfish fanatic ie heavy gear and late nights.

I have now moved to spinning for bream. I use both HBs and SPs and have been shore based in sydney harbour.

I have gone down to 4lb fireline with 6lb monon leader. I was using 6lb mono allover untill I purchased the fireline from Breamaster online.

I retrieve slow I think. (I will post another question on this). I fish around structure. I change lures attacks, atomics squidgies and colours. I try different times, tides and places. I keep trying all the things I read here.

Still no bream (and no other fish) on lures-hb or sp. Yes I leave the bait at home!

What else can I try to help me break the duck??

Mate,
One of the best things you can do is get out with a few of the guys from the site. We actually run Breamers days over here where those with boats donate their time and money to take out a few guys who don't have their own and give them a taste of what it's like.

It's always a great way to see how other guys fish and see what the difference is to what you do. I'm sure a post up on the Tavern will draw a few guys out. Give it a go.

I know how you feel. I have been fishing s/p and h/b now for around 6-8 month and have not got one single bream (It's really pathetic).
your not alone out there and dont worry one day you will hit it big time and you will make up for all the Bream you never got before. I dream of this day allot :D

Howdy fellas, lemme join in!

Well, i'v got ONE but that didnt really count, it just took it on the drop and I didnt really do anything.

Torvic, dont run that down man. You'd be surprised how many bream on softies are taken on the drop and to my way of thinking, "doing nothing" is a valid softie technique.

21-09-2003, 11:50 AM
Doin nothin is my favourite technique...and i aint just talkin breamin!;)
Torvic, the majority of my fish are taken on the drop! Dont discount it, its a valid technique!

Heya fingerling.
Don't lose heart! We fish the harbour with very little success of late. It's important to remember that all these "show ponies" on site are getting southern black bream.
Sydney mainly holds yellowfin bream, which are notoriously slow in winter. Up until middle october try the very back creeks and tributaries like lane cove, parra river, davidson park. or flick some lures at the beach.
Wait till summer. Our day will come when you will be beating the fish off with a sh#tty stick.
Where are you focussing on?

Hi wingala

Thanks for your comments. I have tried around Blues Point, McMahons Point, and Milsons Point. On the other side I have tried the Rose bay area flats and wharf.

Most disappointing was at Milsons Point where some guys using bait and heavy gear got a couple of nice bream right next to me!!!

Do you have any recommendations for spots. I am land based.

G'day Struggler,

Im new to the soft plastics as well, and if you want a place to learn the craft and land a couple of fish, try the Parra River around Five Dock. I've popped out during lunch with a couple of mates for an hour or so three times trying the squidgies and the tally so far is 5 flathead, 1 nice bream and a monster whiting. Fish the runup to high tide and you should get results with squidgy bloodworm, and attack brown trout. Lots of weed beds and very accessible for land based, park the car right there and walk the wall spinning from the Apia club around the bay. One of the guys trolls a couple of Attacks early morning out the back of his Kayak and does well in the Bream stakes around the deeper parts near the carpark.

Hi guys,
I found that when i started fishing with softplastics i didnt know where or how to fish with the plastics. Its all try and error in my books. But as was said before try and hook up with guys who fish with plastics alot.I found that Iron cove around near the rowing club was a great starting point for me, espescially for me as im always land based. even under the bridges there are great for bream and flatties.
If you want some help email me anytime and if ive got the day free id be more than happy to show you some nice spots;) .

Milson's Point is a noisy old spot. The other fellas were spot on. Head further up river and there are many. If the parra river is to far then try Greenwich Hunters Hill. We toddle down the tonnes of reserves 3 hours before high and flick at the pontoons and wharves( in quiet bays) you can see them holding up in the shady spots. Watch for the current and flick forward of it. Let the plastic sink and drift right into the sweet spot, then WHACK. You've got yourself a very good fight.
It is also helpful for casting accuracy. lead shows up beautifully on gel coat fibreglass (just kidding).
legally you are not tresspassing in the tidal zone. Providing you aren't climbing on their wharves. (They never use them anyway)

It sounds like you live near me. I have lost my drivers licence for the next 6 months. Do you fancy being a chauffer in return for some wicked spots?

Fellas,

I too live near Greenwich. I think we might have the foundations for the "Land Based Lower North Shore Breamer's Society"!:D

Hello Struggler,

Just out of curiosity - what atomics are you using and what
colours?

Bream seem hard to tempt at the moment.

Guys

Thanks for your comments, suggestions and offers to help. Unfortunately I dont live on the Lower Nth Shore, just visit the in-laws there!!

I had thought that the area was good for breaming and perhaps I have been hitting the wrong spots. I will try a few others and keep you posted.

I have been using atomic fat grubs 2" in black n silver as well as chartreuse.

I suppose you would have to say they were no good (in my hands) although the same comment I could apply to all lures (hb & sp) I have tried. Conclusion I dont have any evidence to comment either way.

I hope that at least one of them will come Good!!!!!

Hey struggler. Wolstonecraft/ waverton area sounds close to your outlaws. Have a go around the old wharves. climb down the ladders and flick right up under them. You will surely get results. As we did today. The fish are down deep let the lure get right to the bottom and leave it there. Every 5 mins give it a jiggle then let it rest. There is little point trying to strike when you feel a bite as they will clear off. Sydney bream are wily old creatures that require alot more patience.
If you are used to fishing surf breaks, then play pocket billiards or take a crossword with you because at this tim,e of year there is alot of sitting quietly and patiently waiting for the buggers to have a nibble.
Come summer things will all be different. They will be smashing anything that moves and very close to the surface.
Perserverance and lot's of days off work will pay dividends.

Hey Struggler,

You have got plenty of good info from your local fishos so
follow it up.

I can only tell you what is happening up here. Pumkinseed
2" grubs, fished slow with small twitches, lower to mid depth, in
two metres of water around oyster covered rocks, on a rising
tide.

Wonder what will hit you first - a bream or a lizard. Keep us informed!

Did you ever fish the deep hole just off Balls Head??? Some big fish with the odd Jewfish, but I think theyve fenced off the access these days. Can still get there from Greenwich Point by boat but no good for us land based dudes.

When the weather and water warms up a little I'd also like to try the flats at Chinaman's Beach just behind The Spit there. Good Flathead and Bream also.

Sounds good Joe - either all land based, or we get a few boats together :)

How about we throw a few dates / days / areas around ?

What do the rest of you guys think?

Heya riggz.
The licence is a bummer. Public holidays double points, say no more. My fiona is happy as I am around a bit more. I am hitting manly lagoon often. As I can ride my bike there without any hills to climb. I have gat a couple of holiday bream and a few lazy lizards. I am more interested in the rumour of mangrove jacks. A mate got a 4 pounder last year.
The structure's in the lagoon are quite interesting. I have never considered dead shopping trolleys as a quality structure. God bless woolworths and friday night drunks

Gentlemen,
I am certainly up for it. Late october through to end of november works for me. Shore based or boat is good for me. If we are to fish from the shore maybe lane cove river around boronia park. There is an excellent walking track just above the mangroves. So there would be plenty of room. We have had a fair bit of luck around that way.

Some success at last!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for their tips. Today I fished around iron cove and I finally caught a fish on a lure!!! A small whiting finally devoured my pink attach lure. I switched to hbs after 1.5 hours on the SPs without a touch.

I know there were some bream there I had my 7 year old son fishing with me (he will only use Bait) he caught 3 small bream. He keeps asking me if I want to try with his line and bait!!

I will be out trying again soon I hope. I will keep you posted, especially if I finally get a bream!!

Hi,
Yep, I'd be up for a gatherin' but, being boatless, would probably need a landbased option. Like Wingala I would prefer late Oct or Nov due to work commitments. Will start sharpening hooks in readiness.
Cheers,

Hey Struggler,

Well done - keep at the sps though. You will get a result soon.

I drifted for an hour yesterday morning then for 2 hours in the
afternoon - not a touch until the second last cast for the day
tempted a 48cm lizard. Dull day so I used dull day grub colour,
John Deere.

Good fishing.

I am certainly a player for late october. I can dust down the tinny. Unfortunately there will be no room as my mate has the outboard.
All is not lost however. ......
There are plenty of vacant punts in tarban creek. I will bring the big bolt cutters. Anyone who hasn't a boat. Go to a shipchandlers and buy some cheapo paddles and a shackle to re hitch the punts when we are done.
The owners never use them anyway.
The way I see it. If it is returned, reshackled and clean everything is ok.
