No doubt the Min Kotas are the best, but beyond my budget. Got a fantastic deal on a motor guide foot control, bow mount, altho it s a freshwater model, ( I am taking anti corrosion precautions) it is just great, still learning mastering it and times you might see doing what appears like balroom dancing mid river. With a casting seat foot on the pedal sneaking up, just when are you going to start biting?

Rodmy, you wont be disapointed with it, they're a nice unit. Practice is the key but, so if you need an excuse, go fishing , go fishing, go fishing.

Hi Rodmy, don't be fooled by people saying MinnKota are the best, one of the main reasons for that is that MinnKota have never had any real competion in this country.

Now before all you MK fans come down on me like a ton of mullet, I'm not saying MK are not a good motor, all I'm saying is up until recently there was really no choice here. And keep in mind that in the US, Motor Guide far out sells MinnKota.

Foot controlled Bow mounts are almost as important as rod and reel, they can make the whole experience a lot more successfull.
I have the Kota and I have used a Motor guide on My good friend Craig Stewarts Boat many times, I know which one i prefer, I'll keep that to myself but i will say this," it must be foot controlled and on the Bow".
Either one will get you out, fishin successfully, wether you like servo driven, cable steered, Salt water or Fresh if you look after em they will all serve you well. If you're buying a boat and loaning the money, factor in at least enough extra dosh to purchase the one within your budget, it means the differance between 12 straight hours of casting, to 9 hours of manouvering 3 hours of casting.
Electric motor = Fish in the Boat

Geoff, it's interesting how different things are veiwed in different places and styles of fishing, in FNQ you can't give foot controlled
motors away. Most FNQ fisho's have found them far to slow in response time, when you need to get a fish away from the mangroves in a hurry.

I have used and still do use a MinnKota auto pilot, in the 6 years I have had it, it's been nothing but trouble, getting parts, replacing rubber mount etc, it's now about to be retired. I would never buy a foot controlled electric again, MinnKota or any other brand for that matter, the amount of big barra that motor has cost me is well let'as just say grrrrrrrr.

I'm at the moment tossing up what to replace it with, MK or MG, what ever I decide it will not be foot controlled.

I have used an electric motor on my canoe since 1991. A T24 Thruster. Never once in all the hundreds and hundreds of kms I have traveled up and through our states rivers and dams has this motor ever let me down. The plastic shroud around the top has split a few times ..but this design fault has been rectified in the new T25 thruster now on the market.

Hi Samurai

well all I can add is that once I got sorted on pulling out from snags on the leccy than my capture rate climbed. Now I do it on a cable steer Minn Kota, the direct response is a life saver. No delay from servos but alas no auto pilot. The important thing to remember is not to under power the boat with your leccy choice.

My boat is good with the 36lb but that would be insufficient for the Polycraft that I used yesterday so it is fitted with 55lbs of thrust. One of the most disconcerting things about cable steer is the torque generated when turning with high power settings. It is definately something that you overcome with practice.

I must admit I have not been a fan of the cable steers, I just don't like the way the MG is set up.

Had a go of the MK Rod had on the Poly Craft and now I think I'll change my mind. Very impressed.
