hey dj,
im pretty slow at tying.the small ones take about 5 mins, but bigger ones take longer because i fluff around a bit.i will do a bit ,go away ,and come back do a bit more.the epoxy is a bit of a pain, but gives a good effect.

Nuckle a big king probably would pass it up, because kings are cunning... Plicks if i may say so, i recently put a live squid on ones nose was about 30kg and it turned it's nose up and kept swimming..

hi bloop,rod is actually 10wt composite developments,lefty kreh 10wt intermediate line,scientific angler 9-10wt reel.

hi perk, fight was drama filled as usual with kings.hooked him in <6mts of water in an area we pop for tailor.the fish went nuts at first, but i let him run as he headed to deeper water.it should have smoked me in the first 30secs,but my mate drove the boat and followed the fish with light pressure.once in deeper water i put the pressure back on ,and got him in the net.some kings just make mistakes.fish released unharmed.

hi bream lust,if ur on the gold coast you have no trouble finding good fish.gotta put in the time though.

they all look awesome... id prob struggle to cast the smalls let alone the bigger ones haha

bomb

yeah mate,
dont worry, i think the middle left will be short range casts into a burley trail for kings and bonnies.mainly cos i think the tail will wrap with too many backcasts
the pink thing [bottom] will also be short range casts to creek snags for barra on the next trip.or possibly to teased-up gt boatside

bomb
08-09-2010, 07:26 AM
yeah mate,
firstly wrap the shank with flash, then overlay with 6lb mono, then coat with 5min epoxy.makes them bullet proof.then tie in the wing.

I tied them for whiting after reading about them, I just haven't really given them a decent go.
There is a little piece of foam tied into the stinger hook to make the tail float up off the bottom. Theory sounds good, although maybe just a simply San Juan worm would work just as well. I have some little dubbed flies using Fuzzle Dub brushed out with some coneheads for weight. These on the sandflat might work well.
And then there is a American fly I've been reading about, the Briminator, which is a crazy charlie style with a soft hackle and more mobile tail. It sounds good too.
So many things to try.

When I was in NZ recently I hired a guide for the day and he used a very simply worm fly. Basically floss on a very curve hook. Might work better in the fast rocky NZ stream then on a sand flat.

I went away from fly fishing for a while but the bug has bitten again.

Haven't fished for yellowbelly, but from my reading I would look for something with some bulk. Pink things, wooly buggars, bigger rabbit/zonker strip style, some of the crayfish style flies would probably work. Gives you a starting point I hope.

I remember many years ago Steve Starling was writing about sight fishing to Goldens in Glenbawn. From memory the fly was almost an epic Salmon (Freshwater) style fly but with more natural colours. 15 or so steps in the tying I think.

i am going to windemere dam and burrendong dam [top dams for yellas in nsw]next month chasing yellas with 2 goals in mind: catch a yella on fly and also get one on a popper.

will post pics of the flies i have in mind to use ,tomorrow, when i dig em out.but basically one is weighted zonker/baitfish pattern with weed guard.the other is kind of like a pink thing but only black and orange
