How ya doin?

Been lurkin a bit, picked up some great tips.
Haven't targetted bream for years.

Used to be my staple fish along with flathead and chopper tailor.
(grew up on the Tweed river, (Tweed Heads,NSW).
I live in Adelaide now.

They are bloody good fun on light tackle.

Never thought they'd be targetted as a "sportfish" though
;)

As far as "lure" fishing goes, I've always used the hard bodied styles, and have had success targetting flathead, sooty grunter, barramundi as well as other fish species.

I've had a little dabble with plastics in the past with little success, but with all the current discussions on plastics think I'll give it another go.

Anyway congratulations on the site /forum.

Think I'm going to buy 7' Shimano stick (Squidgy?) and a Okuma AV15.

CYA

I'll be lurking ...

Welcome to Breammaster Bierdo,

All reports are you have some fantastic sized Beam in your neck of the woods, look forward to seeing some pics of al the thumpers we hear about. There have been some interesting articles in the past from Sth Oz, The Todd river rings a bell. Look forward to hearing how the softies go.

cheers

PS, there have been very good reports about the Squidgie Stick and myself and numerous others have AV15`s in our collection, and in my opinion that`ll be a nice combo for both hards and softs and has a bit of guts as well. Best of luck.

WELCOME BEIRDO,
As a kid I used to fish the Onkaparinga River, do you ever get down that way, and does it produce these days? I've been in W.A for 15 years and would like to try for some bream when I come over in October, any suggestions?
Another great sportfish believe it or not, was dirty old carp on light gear in the shallow back waters of the mighty MURRAY RIVER.

Cheers

I've heard that too Richo, haven't caught any monsters as yet though.

Still not sure about the softies, I'll give 'em a go though.

Todd River? Not sure where that is?

Yep hope it's a good setup, not fully decided on which rod yet, usually use a baitcaster / 6'6" pistol grip setup, been a while since I touched a threadline. But I'd like to use the 4lb fireline so looks like an "egg-beater" it is.

Grunter,

As a matter of fact I was down there on the weekend, caught one on a minnow.

There's still heaps of bream in there, closed season at the moment upstream from Sth road bridge as they are spawning.

Carp!!, Hope you weren't practicing catch & release on them.

Cheers

NO CATCH AND RELEASE THERE.
Back then I actually thought it would be good to promote them as a light tackle sport fish to help erradicate them. We seem to be able to endanger any other species to the point of regulation. If they became a popular target, rather than regulate them we could irradicate them. We would save heaps of taxs..lol:D

Hi Bierdo

the ol' carp, I use to target them as a kid. I'd catch the bus to Adelaide with all my gear and catch them on bread dough by the University footbridge. After catching a couple of dozen I would drop them in the nearest rubbish bin. I bet the garbos hated me given that this was usually during summer.

Hey Richo, You goose!!!!!

The Todd River is in the Northern Territory and for most of the year there is no water in it and definately never any bream

Sorry Mim, but I'm compelled to point out that the Todd River also exists in S.A. Check out the Eyre Peninsula.

Hi Grunter

I'm pretty well travelled and know South Oz like the back of my hand but have never heard of the Todd River in SA.

Whereabouts is it on Eyre Peninsula?

I checked out Geoscience Australia and found a Todd Creek Dam and there is no way you'll catch a Bream in it.

try this link:

J.P it's on the eastern side of the Eyre, mid to lower region. I think it's tidal but not sure as I don't know it first hand. It's in the N.A.F.A as a bream sensation.( page 136).

Hi Grunter

I got it! Shows how important it is to spell correctly.
I must admit that I haven't knowingly fished it although I have covered a lot of that coast.

http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/gazd01?rec=185787

if you click on the blue cross you'll zoom in a bit closer and it's midway between Tumby Bay and Port Lincoln. So you say it rates a mention in NAFA, interesting, I'll check it out. Not exactly a lot of fresh water around there and the bream in SA are more sea run making use of the creeks and rivers for spawning. I hope the area doesn't get flogged at this time of year. When I was a kid the Onkaparinga was flogged by greedy fishos at this time of year and so the up river ban was established.

 goose:p :p :p Mim you should read more, theres not a mag out there that I don`t buy, just in case there is a bream article in it, and at the moment Im looking at the hooters on page 136 (and every other page:D) of NAFAs Special 10th Anniversary annual - its still in shops if you want to hunt it down. Its an article called The TOD SA`s Little BIG Bream river, and I quote:

"All the stench of mistreated bacon (the place must stink) in the world wouldn`t deter me from a fishery where 3pd is the average and 5-6pd fish nothing out of the ordinary"

It isn`t supposed to be a lure friendly river but by the sounds its worth a nosy. So yep The Tod exists.

Hi Richo

an innocent mistake given that the original spelling was wrong, no offence intended.
Mim asked me if I knew the Todd River and I said no. I didn't even think to search the name with a single 'd'

Hey JP,
Do you know any spots worth a flick, I was counting on the Onkaparinga as it was close to base. The closure has buggered that up...not to worry.

Hi Grunter

the following link is SA fisheries website and shows that the closure on bream is only above the Main South Rd bridge.

http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/pages/fisheries/rec_fishing/gfi_05.htm:sectID=1133&tempID=65

you can still fish for Bream down lower and there is plenty of water to do it in as those lower reaches are very tidal. Now I'm in Perth not Adelaide and keep in contact with my Dad back in Adelaide. I've been here 4 years. Now from what I'm told West Lakes and the upper Port River are out of bounds due to the rotten algal problem which the SA gov is trying to eradicate.

So I suggest try the Onk or if you get a ride on a boat check out the North Arm mangroves and down behind Garden Island, try launching at Garden Island. Also of note in this scenario is to try the upper reaches of the creeks around Dry Creek (you know, the saltpans) that feed into the North Arm.

You have always got the Patawolonga around the King St bridge or the Weir, should be able to pickup some soapies or Bream there or the ocean side of the weir.

:D I've probably just been put on a hit list for that little titbit.

Now if you do a trip down south to Victor Harbour maybe taking in some Langhorne creek and McLaren Vale wines then try the mouth of the Hindmarsh and Inman Rivers. This is very much a tidal thing and I'm unsure of the pollution situation. Maybe no fish.

Now if your getting down to the SE say MT Gambier way then you've got a stack of options including one of my favorites just over the Victoran border. That is the Glenelg River and the scenary is spectacular.

Dare I mention Kangaroo Island, just ask the locals if you spend a few days there and they'll point you in the right direction.

Try catching up with Shauno online as he is the Onkaparinga Breamer of note.

Thanks JP,
I'll be sure to give the southern area a go, Victa, langhorns etc, May even get up to that OTHER spot just the other side of Glenelg. Does that one warrent a change of identity....JP who?:)
Thanks again,
Grunter

Not sure about the water quality in the Patawolong right now, there are signs up saying "no water sports 'till further notice".

So if you're not fishing the ocean side of the wier, catch and release of everything might be the go.

Cheers, good luck with the fishing.

Hi Bierdo,
The Pato' has always been the ideal waterway for the promotion of catch and release, I haven't see it for about 15 years but it sounds like they are the same signs that have been there for as long as I can remember. If you get the chance to fish it in the near future, let me know how you get on.

Cheers,
Grunter

No worries, I'll let you know how I go next time I go down there.
