hmmmm
I'm no expert by a long shot, but this is what I've noticed so far.
A lot of the fly boys who fish clousers swear by chatruese, and their favourite catch cry seems to be
"If it ain't chatruese it ain't no use". Flies tend to have a lot of flash ... attractor style flies.
I haven't really used them enough to have caught anything on them (although i might soon).
Rather, I've had a fair bit of luck with smaller black winged-green body-red tailed crazy charlie type flies on dusk. Only small (say on a size 4 hook at the most, but preferably a size six) with a bit of suitable krystal flash tied in after the wing.
With these flies gold bodies are another possibility.
BMSs most notably in olive, grey, white and black (although not in that order) are great colours, but I can never seem to tie them properly.
ummmm but if you're using smaller flies, I think tails that really stand out from the rest of the fly are important. Marabou in orange, fluoro pink or red for example.
I might post a few pics when the scanner gets delivered this week if you like.

Try a whole range of colours - and find ones that work on your local water - I have been told it has to be gold eyes but I have no real evidence that this is the case

Like you, I'm new to fly tying and fly fishing. The flies that I have caught bream on, however, have been size six chartreuse flies. A bit of flash, biggish body, you know the ones.
BJ,
Not long a go Ian Sewell did a story in the DohDohDoh mag about fly colours for Breamin'. Worth a read if you can get it.
Basically it was about imitating the colours you use with hard body and soft plastics.
Makes sence.

I believe muz wilson bms's are meant to traditionally imitate small minnows aren't they ? The white ones really do look like whitebait.
What a great fly...
