Hard bodies Vs Sp's!!!

Hi fellow breamers,

I know this question has probably been asked 100's of time but could you please tell me what your thoughts are on HB vs Sp's??

I haven't spun for bream before but can't wait to get a chance to. It seems to me as HB lures cost more and when you are getting snagged by bream four or five times in a day this could become very expensive.

If costs were not a factor which would you fish with to catch the most fish??

And also which one do you find more enjoyable?

For what you intend doing and where you'll be fishing I think a small selection of both will serve you well. No need to go overboard though, 4 or 5 good HBs and a handful of small SPs will get you started. You're in the fortunate position that most of your bream will never have seen a lure, especially if you get 'off the beaten track'. Your point about cost of HBs and SPs is a good one, there is a substantial difference. Remember though that there is a limit to how many fish you can get on a SP before it falls apart. I've got a very battered Attack minnow that's caught well over a hundred bream in the Derwent and it's still going (after replacing the hooks 5 or 6 times). Having said that I've lost count of the amount of times I've lost a new HB on the first cast:(
Anyway, keep plugging away. You're obviously very keen, there's no doubt you'll have a good spring and summer :)

I use both HB's & SP's & mostly I find that during the warmer months when the water temperature is up & the bream are more active I get about the same amount of bream on both styles of lure. I just select whichever one is best for the structure I'm fishing. As the water temperature drops I find SP's a lot more successful as they can be fished a lot slower which seems to work.

Having said that with all the new HB's out that suspend properly & have action at very low speed I expect now I am using them my cool water results on Hb's will improve.

I think its very important to have both & be able to rig & use them properly otherwise you could miss out on fish.

I guess too (others with more experience would know better); but the SP's can get to depths that many HB's wouldn't, so you could swim a SP along a dropoff and let it drop down into any holes, - bit tricky to do with a HB. On the other hand, HB's have the ability to float/suspend, and this technique has proven deadly.
Though the fish you target would probably chase a bottle top with a hook attached to it. Some of those estuaries would be slim pickings so I don't think the bream would be too fussy when it comes to prospective prey/food items
