Hi fellow breamers,

I have recently put a post on most bream caught in a day using SP's. Some people say you can catch more than 50 and even a 100 fish in a day. I can't ever imagine catch this many on bait. is i because you can cover more ground???? What are your thoughts on the bait VS Sp's?? I haven't fished SP's my self but would much rather be able to catch bream on SP's than stay up all night catch live prawns for bait. Can't wait to give the SP's a go.

What are your thoughts

Most of it has to do with the fact that most bait fishos tend to drop a line and wait for things to happen. With lure fishing, we tend to keep on the move both in position and with the lire in the water.

This way we cover much more ground and hopefully find the fish.

It's definitely an "area covered" factor.
Like all types of lure fishing, you seem to either walk/boat a hell of a lot of water, compared to dropping the anchor and waiting

I have never got fish as often or as good as i have using both lures and plastics, nor have i enjoyed the thrill of the hunt so much to. There's a bit more to it than bait fishing, depends what your cuppa tea is, if you just want to pass the day away sitting in a chair with a stubbie, which is a great way to fish, good on you. I prefer to learn about a species, target it specifically, and use all my knowledge, skill and determination to hunt it. It is quite rewarding to pull fish using all of the above i just mentiond, but it can be hard work at times, it's always a challenge.

I'm in the same boat as Geoff. Since going over to using artificials I've caught more bream, more often, and of better size than I ever did on bait. That having been said, I think you'd be able to pull alot of bream applying lure fishing tactics to bait. It's doubtful though that I'd ever go to the trouble of getting hold of some fresh bait to try it out, not to mention the mess and inconvenience of using it.

Yup, plastics have improved my catch rate dramatically.....prolly because more thought goes into where and when etc. Not just throwing in a line and praying that a fish happens to wander past.

Hiya...

I personally have out fished any of my lure sessions with bait.

I started lure fishing as of last December, HB's and was onto bream within my 3rd outing. Some nice just legal ones. As of Feburary this year I have been only been using SP's, mainly for cost reasons, and have only managed to catch my wallet. I go fishing atleast 2 times a week minimum.

So why do I keep doing it? Because I am fishing not catching. If I just wanted to catch fish I would tool up with some prawns. But I am fishing and enjoy the challenge and the hunt. I'd rather spend the day chucking SP's around a stretch of water rather then sitting on my arse and waiting for a fish to come across my bait.

So in my experience bait has out fished lures. But that isn't going to stop me casting lures for bream. It's just good fun walking up and down the Swan for the day looking for the little beasties.

...Cheers

Shane

I think the reason that most lure fishos catch more fish is that they relese the fish and then keep on catching it again so they havent actually caught 20 fish, they've caught 1 fish 20 times:D ;) :p

Without question lures will out fish bait on bream anywhere, anyhow, anytime.

I fished for bream on bait for years and caught some good fish but I used to fish many sessions without getting any at all.

These days on lures I have only had one session in the last year where I didn't get at least one bream.

Plus I've caught more bream over 40cm on lures (got 3 last week) in the last year than I did in the 10 years before that on bait.

With lures you are covering more ground which is a big factor. But a breams diet is, small baitfish, shrimp, prawns, crabs, mussels etc. How often do you think they see a dead prawn? Not very often I'd say, but how often would they eat a live prawn or shrimp? Every day probably, your SP's looks to them like a live shrimp, that's why they eat them so well.

I have never caught alot of bream on lures at one time, but it is mutch more fun catching 1 bream on a lure than catching 10 on bait :D

Using lures, be it SP's or HB's, for me is a lot more productive than sitting there with bait. My reasoning is that it is a more active style of fishing rather than a passive style. Friends of mine ask if I ever get bored sitting in the one spot for hours waiting for things to happen while in reality I am always moving making things happen.

Why wait for a fish to come to you when you can go to the fish,

Cheers,
