In this months Fishing Victoria Monthly, the artical on Bemm river in paragraphs 2 and 3 they talk about there competition which was held between Bemm river angling club and Stratford angling club and Di Cunningham caught there winning fish of 1.291kg.
Then in the next paragraph they go into that the competition is a catch and release event and states " with catch and release paramount", I don't know if they saw the photo but the fish is as dead as they come, the only thing missing is a coffin.
I have attached two photos , check it out, DISGRACEFUL.

The article says that the ,"Our Bemm River Angling club recently held a competition against the Stratford Angling club."
The author(who is from the Bemm River Angling Club) also says that, "our angling club is leading the way.......with catch and release."
Perhaps she is from the stratford angling club!!!!
No point making a big deal about it.

yer i thought that to justin.. i dont think its to fair on the old lady calling it "disgraceful" thats a bit rashional for keepin that fish, thats how people in her generation were bought up.. now that we know better we should be doin something about it by doin what the bemm riverangling club is obviously doin and leading by example.

Whilst I hate it, people can keep them as it is legal.
But to state in the article the angling club is leading the way etc. with C&R when the fish is clearly as dead as a door nail is disgraceful. Almost as good a journalism as ACA and TT

(Nothing new here:))
Fella's - that photo is what keeps C&R fishing alive.
If everyone did what we did - it would be a hell of alot easier to shut it down. I'm not going to spell it out but - if noone was fishing for food, our acts could not be justified.
You dont have to like it - but fish have to die for catch and release fishing to be excused;).

i agree loz..theres many states overseas that prohibit catch and release because of the ethical point of view of tormenting the fish then letting them go...
i myself dont take bream for a feed but each to there own i guess there is nothing wrong with taking a few for a feed mrs cunningham would be mark cunninghams{who writes reports for bemm river in vic fishing monthly} mother wich in most cases would be a c and r angler...and do strongly back catch and release fishing...
bemm river is one of those places that alot of kill and grill goes on and for 99.9% its within there bag limits and rights to take fish for a feed
so make your own mind up if its rite or wrong in whats happening
we catch and release anglers shove hooks in fishes mouths stress them out heaps ripp the hooks out usualy causing damage with trebles and what not and then release them whilst "they" do the same and put them out of there misery and eat em...
i for one see the harm in both..and the good in both..;)

Many forget most of us (above the age of 25) started out fishing for the table, whether it be bream, snapper, murray cod. Bream was considered one of those excellent table fish that gets targeted simply to get eaten... very much like squid is right now. I know many of you who would NOT consider even eating bream today but will readily take your bag limit of squid.. What's the difference between the 2? I have no problems with people taking fish for a feed, bream included, but within reasonable limits. To kill fish just because you can is not considered reasonable limits... squid included.

The problem isn't that the fish was kept (even though I don't like it), it's that they've said it was released even though it is clearly dead.
Either they've grabbed a different pic or they've flat out lied. If you're comp is C&R then everything has to be released, pure and simple. Otherwise, don't call it a C&R comp.

The thing about kill and grill that really goads me is seeing fish slowly, tediously and tortuously suffocating in a bucket. I can't recall the last time i saw someone who, keeping a fish to eat, humanely slit its throat rather than letting it suffocate. Compared to this deathly torture, the cruelty involved in catch and release, where the fish at least lives and may, in its slow, Pavlovian way, be less inclined to fall for the same lure again, is negligible. I think if more people thought about the fact that, regarding a black bream of that size, they are killing a 30 year old fish for a 5 minute meal, they may choose to eat other faster growing species. Catching fish for food is all well and good, especially when most meat eaters are alienated from the death and cleaning of the meat they daily eat. However, it does reduce the fish to a function of human gastronomic utility, where the fish becomes mere 'food' rather than the wily, living, free creatures we spend so much time studying, stalking, appreciating and that we feel, our nerves full of titillating adrenalin and joy, struggling against our fine lines, rods and reels.

Easy to criticize when you do not know the facts. The competition between the clubs was not catch and release although it is encouraged. You may still look up the original document at www.brac.asn.au/Stratford2010.doc. The Bemm River Angling Club only allows one bream a day to be weighed in which is more conservative than most other clubs. You can read the competition rules at the web site www.brac.asn.au if you are interested in the facts. I don’t see anything wrong with a person keeping a fish for the table.
Heaviest bag competitions are the worst type. 10 bream, 5 perch, 5 tailor (reduced because one well known angler won with a truck load of tailor in 2009), 10 luderick, 10 trevally 5 flathead etc etc. and that is in the morning. In the afternoon they are out again. Now that’s DISCRACEFUL.

I do not believe that any falsehood was intended by the magazine, or the writer and would submit that it was simply an error.
Although I haven't kept a fish - and I've caught plenty in both fresh and salt - for a long time, who is anyone to say people cannot keep a feed, if they comply with the regulations that are in force? I appreciate that Bream are very old when they get to the larger sizes, but let's be realistic - there is no shortage of them in our waterways, are there???
I feel that a lot of the rubbish that some of the trout fly angling fraternity (and other fisherpeople) espouse in relation to rights to fish and their catch or release ethos, does not correlate to our way of life in Australia - some people believe they own the water and all the fish. Everyone is entitled to their own choices.
Off soapbox........
