Hi All ,
Heres a few pics of my Hobie Quest ready for some upcoming Yak bream comps.
The live well holds 25 or 35l depending on where I put the outlet fittings and is powered by a Rule380 bilge pump .
All electrics wired to switches on the center consol and powered off a 12V battery in waterproof container under the seat.
The Cuda 300 fish finder has a thru- hull transducer set up using dielectric grease and previously water .
The anchorlight/flagpole uses a marine 12 globe LED mast light from Whitworths mounted in a modified/extended plug in anchor light pole.
Very bright and very low power usage.
There are two Ram mount balls mounted on a aluminium doubler on the consol
which take a pair of 2008 series RAM tube rod holders although I only normally run one.
Hobie anchor trolley fitted LHS and a "yakyaker "stlye pvc tube landing net holder on the bow.
I have also made a stake out pole which attaches to the anchor trolley which is damn handy on the flats.
Cheers Brendon

Nice Yak mate!
They are pretty heavy looking rods for breaming :o
Have you considered installing a rudder on it? I'm not sure about Hobies but i could not live without mine on my X-factor!

I was wondering how long before somebody noticed them..
Thats my snapper rods .
I am currently using a Berkley Dropshot 7ft 4 kG rod with a Daiwa Revros in a 2000 size.
Re the rudder it will definately be the next purchase for the Quest.

I thought that might be the case. There is a snapper mission planned for tomorrow morning. I'll be launching at woodies around 6:30am and heading out from there. A few yak fishers are going along I believe. Perfect winds for it (virtually none).
You wont look back once you have a rudder. They are great for long trips to keep you on track (eg 5k's offshore) as well as tight quarters stuff.

Hi Hazel ,
I am watching the trip section on YFW and may head down to Penguin Island but wont be heading out wide as I dont have EPIRB or flares hence need to stay within 400m from shore..
Fisheries/Water Police were in evidence on Friday down that way as you would expect.
Must pick up a release weight as well.

Top looking rig buddy! Looks awesome!

Nice setup! Given you're paddling not pedalling, not sure the rudder will be absolutely necessary and if you get one, you'll need a foot controlled one as your hands will be on the paddles.

No worries mate. EPIRB is not required in the metro exemption area which includes the sound out to Rotto. Flares... good point, I need some too.
And that is some very green lawn!!!

heres the Rudder kit for the quest
http://www.austinkayak.com/products/140/Hobie-Quest-Rudder-Kit.html
There is a cheaper version but one of the local guys has it and not all that happy with it.
The rudder will sure make life easier in strong cross winds .Also allows you to adjust attitude whilst drift or at anchor to a degree.
cheers Brendon
Get yourself an old table tennis bat / ping pong paddle to help adjust drifts and position your yak whist still fishing. This means that you don't have to put down your rod and use your big paddle with two hands to make these adjustments. Very handy if you have a fish on and need to change position slightly to continue fighting the fish.

That is a brilliant idea! I shall bring these aboard for my next bream sess.

Hi Breamcraft,

I have already bought a ping pong bat from the 2buck shop
But it was so nasty I have not used it .

I decided I could do better than the 2 Buck Shop ping pong bat so knocked this up from a scrap bit of 18mm plywood.
5 minutes to cut out,10 sanding/rounding off and a quick coat of marine varnish done!
I have seen a version on a yankee site where they cut a deep notch in one side and then they used this as a hook to attach to overhanging tree branches to hold position.
I figure I can use mine as a bait cutting board as well.
Anyway will trial and reduce size if need be.

Hmmm Brendon, how much do you charge for the installation?? lol looks much neater than mine. I will be ripping all my electronics etc out soon and re-doing it as I need to replace all the connections every couple of outings due to corrosion etc.
Want to come on a Murray Bream mission sometime soon?

Love to mate ,
If you loan me some more of your bream mojo (last lots runout:() I am sure I could give you a hand to sort your wiring out.
I just went back to your Yak posts on YFW to see what I could of your wiring etc but could not see much of it.
I think mine has been pretty reliable so far as I have done as many connections as possible in side the water proof battery box,
Where I have had to join wires I have used either in-line crimps or soldered them together and then either coated in neutral cure RTV/Selleys Allclear or dielectric (insulating) grease and then put heat shrink over them.
I used those plastic joiner strips inside the box as they were cheap but if I was to do it again I would try to use 2 buss bars ($17 ea at DohDohDoh) as this would simplify the wiring and allow the use of crimped terminals .
Where I have had to conect wires to things like the terminals on the power plug behind the seat I filled the inside of conector up (potted) with dielectric grease but you could also use something like CRC soft seal (great for car battery terminals).
Good quality marine switches that are rubber encapsulated are 5 bucks EA from J-CAR.
As you can see after nearly 15 years working on float planes I am a bit of nutter when it comes to corrosion protection :o

well for starters id probably swap that overhead combo for a 1-3 kilo graphite rod with a 1000 size reel, 4lb braid and 4lb flurocarbon leader with an sx 40 on the end and the fish will be slapping the sides of ya kayak in no time buddy;) yeh its a bit of money but even cheap set ups will pull in the fish and its worth it at the end of the day with 3 big bream in ya livewell at ya next kayak comp

Cheers mate, I think you said you're busy this weekend, but next weekend want to head out somewhere for a Bream bash? With the wiring, I have got most of my stuff from Jaycar and have been relying on their advice - I also don't solder and in the latest bits I've done, I have just used the heatshrink connectors - they seem to be holding up much better.

Hi Shano ,
My bream rig is a Daiwa revros 2000 and a Berkley dropshot 7ft2"2- 4kg rod .
I have been using Bekley Fireline crystal in about 8lb and 8lb leader but was thinking of going lighter and only found out about berkley braid actual breaking strains later....
My first spool of fluro carbon leader was 6lb and now that I think about it I have not caught a bream since I bought the 8lb:(.
Trying to get out every week.
Thanks Bream Master and Ice Man
Great choice with the mirage drive hobie.

That sounds great for the following weekend Ben.
I noticed your PB bream is 42cm .Did you catch that since we last fished together?
I have just booked a days guided yak fishing in Dublin Ireland of all places for the end of July chasing bass and Irish ocean fish:D.
Will be interesting to see some new techniques.

I have a Hobie Outback Fish and love it. Have caught my Pb Bream (41cm), Pb Flathead (63cm) and first ever bass from it so far.
You need to make sure everything is secure when you are out and about. Its a real pain when you are looking for somethine later in the day and then realise the last time you used/saw it was out on your Yak - things very quietly slip overboard when you are on your Yak.
Mine is a peddle - except when I forget to pack them!!

Hi Shore thing ,
Lost two pair of pliers now and dropped a couple of blade lures down the scuppers as well:(.
Most of my small stuff like braid scissors ,camera, pocket knife are on lanyards on my PFD ,Rods, paddle and landing net all on leashes every else is inside front hatch or a waterproof bag attached behind seat.
Important stuff like car keys ,walllet and phone are kept in a dry bag clipped inside front hatch.
I have one of those berkley soft plastic wallets with the tackle box in one side which carries all my river/bream gear this lives under the hobie tacle box in the center hatch.
I have left my paddle at home....
Cheers Brendon

Bugger can now add lost Berkley dropshot 2-4kg rod and Daiwa Revros 2000 and a box of leadhead jigs to the dropped list as I rolled the Yak in 8m of water of the southern end of Penguin Island chasing sambos last weekend .
Only just shifted them to rear rod holder and forgot to leash:mad:
Got the yak upright and back in no worries though.

PS any body seen any good bream combos going cheap:o

Hi Brendon,
I have a devise that could possibly save your fishing gear it attaches to the rod and if you lose it overboard the device releases a float on a fine line so you can retrieve your rod back.
They retail for about $ 25.00 its a cheap insurance policy and could save you a lot of heartache and cost.
I will try to put a picture up to show you.
The only downside is you only get one go at them
cheers
