Hey Guys,
Just picked up a sounder for the canoe, has anybody ever made a transom mount into a thru hull??
I will set it up initially from an external mount but will eventually =want through hull mount it.
Any advise would be great.
Thanks Dale.

All you need to do is wet box your tranny, the transducer needs to be submersed in glycerene...And sealed so none escapes :)

Glycerene was always a good liquid to use but though the purists will slam me, I have mine pinging happily through about 15 mm of fibre glass using only a dirty great blob of clear silicone to hold it there.
I have done this on other boats and never had a problem.
Just have to make sure you don't get any bubbles under the transducer in the goo and it works fine. You may have to crank the GAIN control up higher as it has more to ping through in terms of thickness.
Some guys just use a piece of round gutter PVC piping, cut it to the right shape, silicone it down, fill with glycerene or medium viscosity oil and screw on one of those end caps that fits ther PVC pipe.
If it doesn't work properly where you have it you can just rip it up and move somewhere else.............. try to avoid the really sloping parts of the V hull and make sure it is vertical before it sets.

I read up a bit before i did mine on AKKF.com and 1 option was using a wet box (which seemed like a hassle) the other was to embed the transducer in clear silicone.I went with the 2nd option and it works great and has been in place for about 12 months.
You just rough up the area where you want the trans with some fine sand paper, then i cut out a box with thick foam and siliconed that in place, let it dry. Then i filled the box with clear silicone being carefull not to create any bubbles and slowly pressed the trans to the bottom which causes the silicone to come up and cover the trans(hence the box)
I must say i was pleasantly surprised with the result and if you stuff it up or want to upgrade then its just a matter of peeling of the silicone.
I also used foam/silicone to make a battery box inside the hull, works a treat.

Thanks nerus,
I have been looking on the other forums a bit to try and work out which will be the best option, wet box or silconed to base of the noo. The advantage is that the bottom is flat so no worries there.
Have you got any pics of what you have done? Did you just use Selleys all clear?
Cheers DAle.

As far as i knew transducers needed to be submersed in a liquid or they burn out??? All the sounders i have ever purchased say never to run them out of water??

Selleys all clear works fine, you might have to leave it for 24 hours or so before you take it out on the water for the first time.
For folks attaching side scan fish finders you have to mount them externally i believe though,,you can buy a fitting that screws into your bung hole (kayaks bung hole that is :D),chlick on this link for details http://yakass.net/articles/87-equipment/335-balls-of-steel
If folks really want to be fussy sandbag your transducer in place before glueing and take it for a paddle to see if its the best place for it.

Mine's mounted with a Hobie transducer kit which is just a foam cut-out in the shape of a tranny, and some marine goo.. Works fine but be careful in a canoe in case there's a bit of wood in the keel section-won't go thru that too well!!

Nice fish Nerus, that's a cracker bream and how far did the jewie tow you around.
For the interim I was thinking of just cable tying the transducer to the bottom of the leccy like the picture attached, and yes I will use stronger cable ties:rolleyes::rolleyes:, this was just done for the pic.
Does anyone know if this will work?
Cheers Dale.

Yeah i've seen them set up like that before Dale, and easy peasy to remove if it doesn't.
Yeah towed my around for 10 mins because i got it on the bream gear and the front treble hooked up on the side of the face.

A free one Alex so i couldn't be too picky, its in the shed now but i think its an eagle 125 or something, shows fish and any bottom structure i want to know about. Its what you get used of IMO.I think they only retail for 200
cheers brenton
Dale, have a watch of these, on the first vid watch from 2:40 and the second watch from 0:40. The install is for a Hobie Pro Angler, I did exactly the same on mine and it works perfectly.

Thanks rob,
That is what I was after and how I thought it would go.

I tried it today on the leccy and worked a treat, just didn't help me catch anything :p:p
Still think, i would like to hull mount it.
