Hi all,
I have been considering a Portland Kingfish combo for a wile know and i have narrowed it down to two options, wanted to run this by you guys to get your opinions.....
Saltiga S-extream Maverik 4500 with Saltiga Combi Jerk Rod
or
Certate Hyper Custom 4000 with saltiga 68S-3 Game
I plan on using it mainly for throwing lures/plastics/poppers at kings in the shallows, but i will probably throw it at small blue fin once every 2 years.
Cheers,
Jon

I have a Certate 4000 matched up to a Saltiga Dorado M Over 80S
I Absolutely love this combo
Really good for casting metals an absolute mile and great for soft plastics also.
Have knocked over some decent fish with it up in the North West of WA, i'm sure it would be great for chasing kingies and tuna
Keep in mind the Saltiga is most likely going to weigh a bit more than the Certate. Either combo you have suggested should be a very solid outfit though

I reckon the Certate Hyper, has the same Hyper Digigear has the Saltiga, cheaper and lighter.

Go the certate. You'll need to put in lots of casts so you'll appreciate not having to close the bail after each one!

im a religous daiwa fan but the amount of certates/saltigas we get given at work to be fixed each week is really starting to worry me, the expeditions seem to be the only reel that hacks it out, for that sort of money a stella sw 5000 will leave the daiwa reels for dead, i hate to say that and mr daiwa dont hate me but its true

not really.
Ive had 2 6500 EXPs
One blow the rotor on my when chasing GT. These fish are all under 15kg but the drag became sticky and something had to give.
My other one was good for about 4yrs and it grindy and loose. Worn main or pinion. Got it repaired and sold both and replaced it with 2 Stellas.
Now I own a older SW8000PG and a 08 SW 20k, soon will be chasing a SW 5k PG.
Back to the questions. How big are the fish you're chasing??
Mate has the Hyper Custom 4000 with a PE 3 rod. Managed to "just" land a 8-9kg YTK. Unfortunately the next few hookups resulted in bustoffs. I thought he's running light drag but checked.....nearly cut my fingers off!!
If the fish are averaging over 8-10kg. Go the Mav 4500!!

You need to speak to the Stella guys who fish for GT's once a week or more. :D
They're all good reels. GT's with a maximum wound up drag are going to wear reels over time. GT's are evil, Kings are a different type of evil. People think Samsons are tough, big kings are tougher and play dirtier.
Any rate, chasing kings Id go the whopper stopper especially if your in close quarters with rugged ground which does occur with the bigger ones over 6 kilos plus.
You want a drag that will pull stop them before they make it home.
Both Saltigas and Stellas are great reels.
The Maverick 4500s have the Carbontex drag system in them which is smoooooth with 10 kg's of rated drag. Combi-jerks are sweeeet..
What size Bluefin are they?

That's what happens when ya bash em on the rail under extreme load :D Plenty of guys done that.
The other point to consider is that there is rumours of a new Saltiga range to replace the Z series, the rumour is they were due to be shown at the osaka fishing show but were delayed and should be revealed in a few months whether or not this is true i really honestly have no idea.

the poppop gt guys who know what they are doing wont fish anymore than 14/15kg, even though the reel is capable of twice that, adding more drag pressure or trying to lock up just makes big fish pissed off it wont slow them down ive seen it happen, a big angry gt/king/tuna will smoke you on 15kg of pressure as quick as if you were fishing 5kg

The certate will do the job fine. i have caught many portland kings on sol and advantage 4000 and capricorn 4500. including this one yesterday of 12.6kg. as i said in the earlier post it takes a lot of casts so you don't want something too heavy and u want an auto bail arm.

Im going to disagree with that. Why would anyone bother with a reel that goes over 5 kilos of drag then?

Thats nice work. I assume there's not an in tight reef fight on Portland kings?
Haven't seen too many images of the big Kings that hang around Rotto. 20+ kg
Anyone?
Wish I could get hold of some footage of big Rotto kings blowing 50WTiagras with 24kg mono line to bits.

That’s all for your comments. I ended up getting the certate hyper 4000 with a saltiga dorado 70s rod, spooled with 20lb j-brown. beautiful combo. I’m glad I didn’t go heavier

sorry i mean as in if a fish like that wants to get into the reef and hang your lure on the pool room wall he will, locking up a reel wont stop him so how ever many kg's of drag you want to throw at the fish isnt really going to make a difference, something like a gt can pull twice as much of its own body weight in pressure or thereabouts
