Heres a couple of pics of one of the Sambos I caught last week. The Rod is a 7'6 Heart Rise, PE2 line class, and the reel is a 2500 size Team Daiwa Advantage!! The Lure is a 7" Gulp jerk shad in nuclear chicken pattern with a 3/4 ounce jig head.
Location approx 30kms west of Bunbury

I have 30lb suffix braid (long story) loaded on this spool and was caught in about 35m of water. The fight took me about 30minutes to get the sambo in the boat. We then spent the next 30-40 minutes trying to get the fish to swim again. I was buggered and so was the sambo. Here is another pic

Maybe the next 30 - 40min trying to get the buggered fish to swim again could have been avoided if he didnt have a gaff through his throat:confused: that would tend to distress any fish, a net would be a better option if your planning to release fish, just a thought!;)

your face says it all Matty. That sambo really bent your rod !
Can't believe you caught that size fish on that light set up.
Good job.

Were they kept or released? Just wondering as they are a crap fish to eat and theres a gaff through its throat:confused:
All were released.
I agree they are not worth eating, besides we already had 2 nice sized dhuies on board. The gaff was used as gently as possible and didnt pierce the fish, sorta thru the lower part of the gills. It was just used to lift the sambo into the boat. I was too buggered to be able to pick it up properly
Its a little bit different to fishing for and playing with bream....:D:D

Even if fish are gaffed in a non lethal area they will still get distressed and that lowers their chances of survival. Dont forget they are full of lactic acid build up after being exhausted from a fight, so when they are peirced with a gaff thats just gunna make matters worse by stressing them even further. Not having a go, just use a net its a way better option when you plan to release any fish. Also hold the fish gently in the water whilst moving in the boat slowly and get the water running through the gills, this will help recovery Nice fish though.

Im hearing ya but this sambo wasnt gunna fit in the net and the sides of the boat were a little too far from the water to pull this one up by hand.
I have never intended to injure a fish that will be released (like most of my fish). The gaff didnt pierce any flesh on this fish.
We idled the boat for 30-40 minutes swimming this big fella before letting it go
