Hi all
just got back from my local fishing spot and couldnt believe wat was happening. As the name of this thread states, some monster mullet were smashing schools of tiny fish. These mullet (mixed in with a few big salmon that i saw come into the shallows) were easily the biggest ive seen, over 50cm and i had a couple of strikes, 1 hookup which i lost seconds later, and a few small tailor.
I was using surface lures (i didnt hav my soft plastics with me as i went fishing this arvo just to get some use of the hb's) so i kept persisting with no more hits.
So my question is, what lures to use for monster mullet....
I was thinking small curltail grubs????
Any response on this topic is much appreciated, i will be heading back for these mullet as soon as possible!!!!
Thanks

hey hot shot, i have landed a few mulet on lures, my biggest being 58cm cought on a calitva zip n ziggy. curltail grubs have been most consistant for me but i have also landed one on a mini micro mullet lol. walk the dog style lures shuld work with a consistant retrieve but id try a 2 or 3 inch curl tail grub for luck.
good luck and please post any results!

Curly tails work and so do shallow diving minnows. Sugar minnows work well to. It targetting the mullet then i take the front treble off as it increases the lures action and the mullet only hit it from behind.

No mullet, but tons of tailor, some nearly 45 cm.... All released.
Good fun on lite gear, i was using metal slices for the tailor, and i saw a few bonito too, but they didnt go near the metal slices, wat lures are good for bonito.... Squidgy flickbaits and bassminnows?
Every time i go fishing at this place their is something different!
One week its mullet and now its tailor and bonito.... Next week it could be jewies!!!!
Any help would be good
thanks

Or if you want much better chance, catch one of the tailor or mullet and put a slab back down with two 3/0's waiting for that jewie.

The mullet I've targeted in the past are smaller and a different sub species but my observations might be of help.
When I was after a few for baits, I would chase them at night. The river has sandworms which swim upstream near the surface. The mullet schools were large and very easy to locate.
A 6 inch gulp sandworm with a tiny stinger hook placed right in the very tip of the tail was quite effective - And when I say the tip of the tail - I mean so it was half in the tip of the tail and half hanging out the back.
Retrieving the lure at a pace suitable for bream would work but a gulp worm moving at twice that speed, was better for the mullet. They seemed to ignore the slower retrieve but when you ramped it up to immitate a constantly swimming surface worm, their competitive instincts would kick in. A faster retrieve would see 15 mullet chasing and bashing the gulp.
But hits dont equal hook ups with the small mouthed mullet I was chasing.
A size 12, short shank stinger, right in the tip of the tail, was small enough to fit in their mouths though.
So if a slowly retrieved lure doesnt get their attention - picking up the pace a little might work.

My only mullet on lure was a bit of a freak capture, and not sure if only hitting from behind is a confirmed mullet thing, but my fish was firmly pinned on the belly hook of a Cultiva Rip-N-Minnow deep diver.
I took that fish twitching deep for barra in a deep river pool close to some rocks. We often see big mullet jumping in there and spalshing about on the surface, and also the odd milkfish and tarpon.

Woah benno..... 50+ sounds great, they pull hard, ayy. The only mullet i ever got on a lure was fowl hooked in the tail and it pulled so hard, that was only about 45cm or so.
Shortlite Ive never caught a barra but does a big mullet compare?
Good stuff though!
Thanks

got it at the barra farm and went just as hard if not harder as the barra in there.
a kid who works there got a mullet 62cm to the fork on a popper.

That would have gone good.
I heard it in another post someone mentioned about mullet soon to be a lure target on in the near future.
Lol!
I'd be in on it!!!!

Different kind of fight. Mullet have a lot of explosive power and heaps more stamina. They do a lot more cruising and higher speed swimming than barra, so their muscle proportions are different, as evidenced by their more streamlined body and powerful forked tail.
