Gidday Shauno, you will love the rod for soft plackys with the soft tip it has. I used mine for hb's as well and yeah she got some balls down low for a biggin if one comes your way.
I've had mine for a while now and love it mate, great warranty as well. Broke mine on a trip down south at Walpole by accident(broke my heart) but got a complete new one after I took it back to the dealer and paid $130, can't beat that sought of warranty. I also have a SJR720 IMX, just the bizz for close in around structure and pilons, got that imfo off the loomis site. That was on there from Adam Router an Aussie sponsored pro down in Melbourne, thanks to him I went and purchased that for the purpose of CQB.
Cheers Steve

Can anyone tell me what that velcro strap around the bottom grip on the dropshot is for ? Every time I play with one in a tackle store I notice it but everyone I ask have NFI on exactly what it does,

Cheers,

Aqua,

The velcro strap is for when you have your rod rigged for drop shotting and the hook is on the keeper you can wrap the strap around the weight on the end of the rig and this keeps it from banging around.

thanks,

Shauno,
The G.Loomis DSR820S is a beautiful rod for soft plasticing for a very wide variety of species because of its ultra soft tip and its very ballsy butt section. But there is another rod that I reckon is just as good and maybe a little more affordable and it is a CBR841 Spin Rod. This rod is a little stiffer in the tip and just as ballsy down low. I have only used a dropshot rod a couple of times and found the tip a little to soft for my liking and way of fishing(gave me a bit of grief setting hooks, but I have seen people use them very effectively) but in the case of the Crankbait I had no troubles with it at all and the little bit of extra length offered just the slightest bit more better casting! The best advice I can give you is before you buy any high quality expensive rod either have a fish with one (not always possible as tackle outlets dont usually lend out loomis's too much.Maybe try finding out who Loomis has got as pro staff in your area and seeing if you can have a fish him/her and try the rod)or find out who is a G.Loomis Pro Dealer in your area and they should have a good selection of rods(must be a pro dealer as normal dealers can only stock GL2) and go in there and have fiddle. G.Loomis make alot of awesome rods and they are bound to have a rod that will definetly suit you.

Interesting to see the mention of the Loomis CBR841 Spin. Didn't know there were any still around. These were designed and built by Steve Ross (Black Diamond Tailored Rods). Guess there's still a few in the system. Of course, we stopped building them when Shimano took over Loomis and decided to have all their rods built in the US. I don't know if they have added this model to the current US built collection??

Hi Cindy, the current Loomis drop shot rods are being built in the US.

Hi Warren,

I knew the Dropshots were being built in the US. I was just wondering if the CBR841 (crankbait spin) that Steve designed and built for Loomis here has been added to their current US built models.

Cheers,

Can someone tell me if the velcro strap on the bottom grip attached on the grip (glued on, etc.) or is it loose?

Traveller,
The velcro strap is actually a band made out of neoprene, it comes off.
I have 2 6'10" DropShots now and have never used the bands. They are nice little rods and especially suited to ultra light and un-weighted SP work. Whils I like the rods, I never use them anymore since I've increased my arsenal of BreamBusters to 3 rods.
I'm yet to find a rod that compares to a BB.

Swoffa,

Thanks for that.. I was thinking about getting a specific drop shot rod but I'm not sure yet...

I assume you're talking about Miller's BreamBusters?

I've been playing around with the Black Diamond Bream Reaper, and so far it works a treat.... Haven't used a Miller for quite a while tho....

Where about are you?

swoffa

Traveller,
The one and only Millerod BreamBuster! I love 'em and can't get enough of 'em.
I've had a few Black Diamond rods in the past (Sumurai blanks) and didn't like them then and now I'm just not willing to give them another shot.

The Loomis DropShot is OK for dropshotting, but I actually prefere just about any Struwick. I currently have a few TPS, BWS and Sofbodz Finesse sticks that I use for this from time to time, chunky rods and unbreakable (it's good to find a use for them :D ).

Hope that helps.

By the way, I'm in Sydney.

Hi Swoffa,

I just got the Bream Reaper from Black Diamonds about a month ago (Rainshadow Blank) and it's been working great. What didn't you like about the older Black Diamond Rods?

I haven't had a chance to play with the Bream Buster what do you like about them?

Sounds like you don't really like the Loomis Dropshot rods.

I'm based in Adelaide but head out to Sydney for work quite often, which area do you generally fish? I'm thinking about carrying my gear next time and have a bit of a fish....

Swoffa,
There is a big difference between the Samurai and the Rainshadow blanks that Black Diamond now use.

I'm sure if you catch up with one of the DB guys in Sydney that'd be happy to show you the new rods and I'm sure Cindy could help as well.

Bear,
I know there's a huge difference with the BD rods now, but I just can't get into them again. I fish with Bill Mcguire (BD) a fair bit and have had a play with his Bream Reapers, they feel OK but there not for me. Besides, I spend enough on BreamBusters, Struddie and Loomis sticks, I don't need another brand to buy compulsively.

Traveller,
The thing I didn't like with the Samurai blank BD's is the guides, there was too many and they were too small. It was just a new concept they were trying that didn't pay off. There are a few shops in Sydney that had to sell the rods for less than cost just to get rid of them.

I usually fish the Parramatta River, let me know when you're coming to town and I'll try to arrange a day off work to get you onto some "real bream"...

"Besides, I spend enough on BreamBusters, Struddie and Loomis sticks, I don't need another brand to buy compulsively."

I'm not suggesting you do, that's why I suggested you catch up with one of the guys to check them out. Always good to have a variety to choose from I find.

Not quite true as the concept is still used in the BD rods today. That's one of the things I like about them. I find the layout helps to load the rod better. I find the biggest problem people have is from knots that are too big. I changed to a better knot and fixed the problem.

Hi Swoffa,

I know what you mean about buying rod compulsively, I have the same problem..... some people have drug habit I have fishing.....lol

I've been really happy with my BD so far, and they've been good in listening to suggestions.

I have quite a few loomis, shaula, td-battler, hlz, and others too....

Would love to go out fishing at the Parramatta River..... We get big bream here in SA though.... just finicky thats all.... Caught my PB yesterday 44.5cm... even caught two of them... so had a good day.... I'll be over in Sydney in a few weeks, just after Easter.

Very nice fish Glenn, well done.

I know Cindy from BD was down for the show, one of the guys might have the new Drop Shot rod if you're interested in checking out another one.

Not seen it myself.

Anyone here not happy with there drop shot rods ,please P.M me and let me know if you want to sell them and buy more of other ones.

On the weekend I had the chance to play with a couple of Jackall rods from Japan, they were very good and so light but with heaps of grunt, they were finished with Sic guides and the finish was up to or better than some high end Aussie rods. If they come in , it will fill a nice little niche in the market place.:D

Hi Bear,

Thanks...
The only problem is I'm in South Oz, but I do talk to Cindy a bit. I'll prolly look at one of their dropshot number too...

BTW, how did you like the special 6ft Bream Reaper?

I've got 2 BD Rods - 6.6ft BR Custom Pro and Jig Cast Special, about to get another 2 - 7ft BR Custom Pro and Jig Cast TE..... Been thinking about a special custom (RX8 blank) BR, but need to talk to Steve/Cindy about it...

Are you coming down to SA/VIC for the Nelson round of the ABT Bream?

Tony, I do have quite a few rods from Japan and agree they're nice, especially the attention to details and finish... Probably the nicest one I have are the Megabass Destroyer and Evergreen....

Mate,
I'm a bit of a BD addict. Love the work Steve does. I've actually got 2 fly rods Steve has done as well as the Barra Cast Light which is kick arse for Barra, Tailor and (hopefully) Salmon.

I've had a 6' for a while now and love the finesse tip style. I've also had the Flats Ranger which is competing hard against the 6'6" which has hardly left me since I got it last year.

Haven't seen the other 2 you're talking about, have you got any pics??

Ta.

Hi Bear,

Which two are you talking about the JigCast? or the Custom Pro?

I really like the 6'6" Reaper for hard bodies.. I haven't played with the Flat Ranger yet, but hope to when I visit the guys (BD) in a few weeks.

I didn't realise the 6ft have a finesse tip, I thought it was a stiffer rod than the 6'6".

Might have to compare notes on my next trip to the West.

I'm just starting to get into fly fishing.... Pity Steve don't do a travel rod - 4 piece, etc.... so I just got myself (well I've ordered it from the states anyway) a Loomis GLX Streamdancer.

The JigCast is not familiar. I have the 7' Reaper and the 7' Flats Ranger.

The 6' I have is a modified 6' Bass Predator. Great feel in the tip for twitching. I like the sound of your stiffer one as well. Will have to look into that  ;)

Would love to catch up when you come over Glenn. Should have a boat available by then.

I'll take some shot of the jig cast and post it up... I haven't got the TE yet though... should have it soon hopefully (when Steve made up my 7ft Reaper Custom Pro....)

How does the 7ft BR compared to the 6ft that you have around the tip section? I've heard that the 7ft is great for SP

Will definitely give you a hoy when I come over next then....

The 6' is basically a smaller version of the 6'6". Powerful butt with a finesse tip for more feel. The 7', 2 piece is very different. Not the thickness in the butt which means it has feel right to the grip. A great rod for plastics.

Loads up really well. I can tell the difference when I don't have it. I leant mine to Jimi for the weekend and just felt out of place with another rod.

Keep in touch.

That's what I heard about the 7ft which is I've ordered it... I liked the finish.... the only other rods that I think finished better are the high-end japanese variety.... like the Megabass, Evergreen, etc....

I find it hard to part with my 6'6" now...so I don't know how you can lent urs out....

Hi Traveller,

We originally had fly rods as part of our range but there wasn't enough demand for fly to keep them as a production rod so we now only build on request. We make 2 and 4 pc. I still have one 8wt in a 4 pc built up so while you are here, if you want to have a look, you are most welcomed to have a test cast. If in the future you are after other four piece fly, just let me know and I can order in what you want and build it up for you.

On the Jig Cast: your rod is a 6ft cast 3-5kg. I think Bear may have had one of those. He hasn't seen the Bass Predator JIg Cast 6'6 3-6kg yet. The TE version you are getting is a beautiful crisp actioned rod with the blue guides and trims. A number of the tournament anglers were fighting over the one you bought! I am sure you will be happy with it.

On the BR TE 6'6 2-5kg: I can show you my son's copy which I have while you are here. At least you can check out the action of it and see if it suits you or not.

Also, have a TE blank for a 3-6kg Flats Ranger to build up. Maybe you'd like to see that as well.

Cheers,
Cindy

Just thought I'd drop in on this post as I caught up with Cindy and Steve at the Sydney Fishing & Outdoor show on the weekend.

Finally got to have a good look at all the new Black Diamonds on offer. Steve has been doing a lot of work refining the range and I must say there are some awesome new models in the range. The Flats Rangers (1-3kg & 2-5kg ) are very impressive! Especially when built up in the custom plus version with the high frame Titanium guides (very nice!).

The drop shot rod has an awesome action, but will probably suit bass fishos more than the breamers. The Tournament Elite 6'6" 3-6kg Jig Cast is one of the most impressive rods I've ever seen. You wont be dissapointed Glenn. I've got the Technus Pro version and it is an awesome Bass spinnerbaiting rod, but the TE takes it to another level.

Steve just keeps making better rods!

Matt

Andrew, where do you get off saying you fish with me a "fair bit". Apart from the SP social days when we don't fish together, my memory tells me me we fished for about 5 minutes one day at Iron Cove and that's it! I don't ever recall you having a play with my Bream Reapers either, so don't bring me into your excuse for not liking Black Diamond Rods.

It is your prerogogative not to like the rods but why do you continually flog a dead horse and keep bringing up the first series of rods Black Diamond built years ago.

There is a huge difference between then and now!

No one is forcing you to buy/use a Black Diamond Rod, so stick to your Bream Busters and enjoy them but give the denegrating remarks a miss and lay off the crap you feel you have to heap on BD every time somebody has a good word to say about them.

Enough is enough!!!!!!!!!

Guy and Ladies,

We'll have our fav. I agree with Bill let's not flog ppls product just because we didn't like something they make years ago.. things change... and it wasn't a service thing too....

Cindy, I'll catch up with you and Steve on my next Sydney trip, should be in a few weeks.

Bill if you're around and up for a fish wouldn't mind a catch up... hope to pick ur brain on a thing or two.

Matt, I have the custom jig cast 6ft and its been working great, caught a stray snapper on it the other day.... I'm hoping to give the Flat Ranger's a try when I catch up the Ross'.
