Well normally I sit at my keyboard and try to wax-lyrical .Not going to today. It was hard or has been hard the last few weeks and was still the same this morning .
And I had this little voice in my head this morning .It told me to look for a fly I tied last year and never used .There was something about it that made me never choose it .
Well it got jumps galore this morning .And there were times that 3 fish would jump one after the other at it and of course just the odd jump.I did have a tiny fish tail spit it.But in one group of three fish this is what took it.

Picture does it an injustice its all of 19cm ;)
I did try the next beach for zero .
So at least after 2 hours today I got something ;)
And for young players I kept the tension on the fish while stripping the line in.Once I picked the fish up the fly fell out !!!

It would depend on the Bream in your area.I'm using a 6 weight which might be over kill lately :p.But you should be fine with a 4 or 5 weight unless you get a school mullieway on .I understand that could be called micro fly fishing.
Yep I tie my own flies some would say not very well but I like the KISS principle
Keep it simple stupid cause I'm well we wont go there:D
I would actually like a bigger Bream .I seem to be or walkers walking by seem to be scarring the big ones off.I'm trying to get them on the surface with popper flies .The tiny to small ones(like the one above) jump out the water. The bigger ones you can see the backs when they are about to strike.
Of course the bigger boys are easier to catch under the water .Well up to 30cms any way .But its more a buzz with a popper fly :D
Cheers
Mick
PS
Bream can be a very hard Fish to get to take a fly.If u enjoy a challenge go for it .

Nice work MickyJ,
I have been looking into see if many people catch bream on flies?
Have you been doing it long?
And i see you mntioned that either a 4 or 5 wt will do.
Do you have a setup that is just suited to bream?, what sort of line and leader?
Surface or suspending is has better results?
Cheers Dale.

I think I said 4 or 5 may do,I personally would be worried about a big fish taking my flies, line etc .I use a 6 weight and others will fish with an 8weight.
When I fish with say bait-fish style flies I use a sinking line .
Currently I am mucking around with popper flies so I have switched back to floating line .
I started out 3 or 4 yrs ago with a cheap shakespear set up that was a 6wieght .But be warned it came with a trout reel for the salt its best to have a reel with a large arbour holds more line.
I'm on my third reel stuffed up my second reel breaking the seat on it.
I'm on my second rod its a pluffger (spelling sorry) Triton 6 weight.
Now all I ever have used for leaders is mono .I did try flurocarbon for a short time but the line kept snapping .
I fish with 6lb leader found that the Bream in my area are fussy and shy away from anything heavier .
Bream on fly are not easy .But they are a challenge .
Do yourself a favour ask questions of everyone who SWFF join a club or ask at your local tackle shop .
Don't do what I have done learnt as I've gone along .
Money has always been tight for me . That's one reason why I only have a 6 weight outfit .
Of course getting Mullieway to hit my flies that has put me off buying a light weight out fit .So far I have been broken of by mullies and a few weeks back I had one take a barbie pink popper fly and strip line then spit the fly!!That alone got the idea out of my mind of lighter gear.
My Largest Bream has only been 28 cms .I am yet to reach 30cms scared a few off the surface lately .
Largest Salmon is about the same .
Missed a few Garfish and Snook which may have been bigger. Not to mention mullies :(
Its lots of work but its fun .
What more can I say wading and casting its what I do

I had a flick this morning and I remembered to take the Reel today:D.
At a small beach .Funny thing with them they were only interested in the areas that the wind was at its strongest. You know Brenton they would only come up when the water was at its most disturbed .the calm areas dead nothing.I had a few jumps when the grange life saving boat went by no joke Grange life savers in the lake
But unlike Friday they weren't hanging around in groups I got the odd multiple jump but mostly singles.
BUT there was something big in the centre of that stretch of water. The small fish were a jumping!!
Mind u the damn wind was pushing my fly to the shore!!The reason I went home in the end.

I'm really keen on trying SWFF, all I do now is FWFF and wouldn't even consider spinning for Trout any time soon.....
Some of the Guy's at my club get into Salt fishing so I'm looking forward to getting away on a trip.
I have only tried FF once with a weighted fly, {a rather large Wooly Bugger}, more for just trying it, but bloody hell you really have to wait on the back cast ALOT longer than Dry fly presentation.
I truly believe if more of the guy's on this forum gave it a go and practiced it and stuck it out through the early difficult stages then there would be a hell of a lot more Fly fissho's around, because it really is a lot more fun to catch fish this way IMO.
Cheers for the thread and well done.

.
Nah You just have to haul arse & shoot the line forward.
Both styles have their problems but I guess saltwater has a much greater demand on the tackle rather than the technique- though freshwater gear stands up if it washed down after each use.
Need my tying kit back.... want to play with my new renzetti vice!

Hi Micky
Do you have a larger picture of the fly?
My Camera skills arent the best .
what I am doing at present (well since last autumn with a knee injury and operation in between and I'm trying to get out of a worse op !!)is trying to catch Bream on a popper fly .
The Bream in my Avatar was caught on a popper made from foam bought at mitre10 painted yellow with yellow nail polish and a fake fur (faux fur) from spot light.Up to friday that was the fly that was getting the main interest. and it was tied on a number 14 or 16 trout hook .
Friday same principle but tied on a number 6 gamakatsu the foam with purple and white craft feathers .Sunday I didnt hook a fish and the popper that got the most interest looked like a xmas decoration red thread white foam green and white craft feathers .
the smaller hooks are damn hard to keep the point clear when tying plus nail polish tends to fall off the foam rather easy.
And don't believe that small hooks get swallowed. All of the fish caught on the trout hooks were hooked in the corner of the mouths.i have a picture of a tiny Bream I caught on a fly tied on a number 6 that has swallowed the fly almost hole . makes me gag just thiking
If your a member of fly life I have based the fly on Morsies whiting fly .Haven't found any whiting yet :D
PS
this larger fly on number 6 hook has a longer tail and of course that leads to tail spits .
I hope that helps

Mate it took this self taught fly guy 2 months to land a bream .
Since then the largest has been 28cms at dusk been a long time since that .
Of course switching to the surface the babies just fly throw the air to reach the fly .Which is part of the fun or rush .
The added bonus is other species that have a sniff .

Nah You just have to haul arse & shoot the line forward.
 I can double haul no problems, I'm not sure what shooting the line on the forward cast has to do with the back cast when you are casting something with a bit of weight..... I just find you have to wait a long time for the line to straighten on the back cast is all, I was still casting a full line, it just took a little to get the hang of that's all.
Cheers.

Double hauling on the back cast should increase the line speed, though the wait time for the rod to load can depend on a number of different factors including the rod/line set up & atmospheric/wind conditions plus loop control etc...
That being said using my mate's 5wt trouty z-axis (felt like a pencil) after using my 9wt it did feel heaps faster.
So I guess you are propbably right.

I keep saying I'm self taught .
I haven't yet in my 3 or 4 years cast all my line in one cast.
Might be silly of me but the fish aren't always that far away from where I'm wading :p
Mind you they are always far off when the winds blowing the wrong direction:eek:

Casting a full line is hardly useful, unless fishing on a lake and your blind flogging........the main reason I practiced until I could do it was to work on my timing, there is no way in hell you can get 90'+ of line out unless your timing is spot on!
Cheers.

Yeah I'm thinking of buying an 8wt to use on the salt and for Yellas and Cod.....and well, if I get back to NZ it'll come in handy.
Cheers.

I was thinking of getting a 4weight until a mullie grabbed a fly .I think I'll stay with my 6 for a while longer.
