View Full Version : silly question # 28
I was just flicking though a beginners book on bait fishing.
And I recall somone saying that plastics are more like bait than hb lures.
So ...
has anyone tried rigging plastics on several hooks at once? A paternoster setup or any variation?
I was imagining the lower sp on a weighted jig and the upper one unweighted.
Maybe even different colours?
Any thoughts?
Would this be seen as poor sportsmanship
a. at any time
b. in competitions
c. not at all?

A few of us guys have certainly considerd it, but just for "Fun" fishing as I am sure that would be a no no during comps. We were looking at drop shoting in particular though, I love your silly questions :D

I have used the rig you described once. All fish were taken on the jig at the bottom of the rig. That was in fairly dirty water. Was going to try it again in clearer water but I haven't got around to trying it yet.
Gary, i dont think that it is considered bad sportsmanship at all, in the world flyfishing championships people can use up to three flies at once!! one plastic can be used to get the fish's attention (say a atrractor type) and the other a more natural colour which it will most likely take!!! works well on trout not sure bout bream though!!

I've tried a two hook Paternoster rig in the surf, half Pillie on the bottom, plastic on top - it worked fine, the Salmon and Tailor seemed to hook up evenly on both, but they may have been attracted by the Pillie......

Not at all, i always use eigs such as the paternoster whilst fishing for flatties and many different reef species in deep channels and drop offs. It's the only way i can fish for the deep water species with lures as the drift done there would take a 2grm jig miles away within a few seconds.

I've fished a two hook paternoster (dropshot) setup with soft plastics in the Barwon River for Bream and Mulloway off a heavy saltwater spin rod. So far no success.
I should probably narrow it down to one of the other and then I would be fishing more appropriate leaders for the size of the plastics.
I think some of the soft plastic squid would have to be a winner there on the Mulloway, maybe in Summer I'll have another go at it.

Gary, theoretically that rig is fine for comps - but it must be done on a cast and retrieve basis. I think if you just put it over the side and then drifted it would count as trolling, which is contrary to the rules.
