I've just put an order in for a 400 Hornet Trophy. I'm now shopping around for an electric and noticed that the 55lb Minn Kota bow mount comes with two different shaft lengths. What kind of difference does the shaft length make and what suggestions would you all make on shaft length for this particular boat,
Cheers,

hehehehe:D
Sorry, all this talk about "does size matter" and shaft length has given me the giggles!
Man i'm childish.
Dave
PS: i can give no advice on this whatsoever... sorry
You will definately be able to get away with the short (48" )shaft.
I bought the long shaft version (54") and even with my higher (than a hornet) sided boat, there is still heaps of shaft left over. So much so that it can be a pain at times. If you go to the minn kota site, there is a page that helps you choose a shaft length based on the height from the waterline to the deck level on your boat.
Check out http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/pdfs/motor_specs.pdf
in particular, the diagrams down the left hand side.
Cheers

The differant sizes are for bow height to the water, I think the Hornet 400's use the 48"( someone please verify) shaft where as larger boats need the extra 4" in depth to keep the prop in the water. I doubt you would need the 65lb 24v system in your Hornet, unless you have a particularly heavy boat, then again if someone knows something I'd love to hear it.
