jig newbie needs basic help

I started having more bream success using lighter line and 4lb leader, Matter of fact I bagged a 38cm bream yesterday. I have gotton some gamakatsu size 2 jigheads in 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 size.

1) I dont know how to tie the jighead to my leader. The hookeye is on the side unllike a regular hook so when I tie the leader on it causes the hook to 'tilt' to side unlike a regular hook that just drops down when tied to my leader. What am I doing wrong ?

2) RIG PROBLEM. I normally use 1 or 2-#1 free running sinkers then a swivel and then 1m of 4lb trace to a size# 2-4 hook with 1 #1 or #0 above the hook.

How do i use the jighead in my rig assuming I tie it correctly to my leader.

3) How do I put the platic[gulp] on the jighead ? Is it supposed to balance the weight so the jighead doesnet tilt for better presentation. Can I just use bait on the jighead?

How is the jighead used in the rig...exra weight, swivel,etc ?

hey mate, kinds unsure what you mean by jig head tilt to the side? But I'll try answer as best I can. The way I do it is conect jighead with a small loop knot, lefty kreh loop, perfection loop, or uni knot pulled tight just short of hook leaving a small loop. As for rigging best to use no swivels or sinkers ( jighead provides the weight) just mainline to leader to jighead, or just jighead straight to mainline if no leader is being used.
As for rigging plastic you want the plastic to look exactly like it did when you pulled it from the packet no bunching or twisting of the plastic so it works with a proper action and doesn't spin through the water, also rig with the hook point riding upwards. Yeah, Stealth is spot on.

To make it easier for you before you rig a plastic in a jighead, firstly position the jighead on the side of plastic (plastic's front all the way to the jighead).
Note the point on a plastic where a jighead hook will be exiting a plastic when rigged.
Make sure the hook exits the plastic in that point. This would ensure that your plastic is strait on a hook without any twists.

Also make sure that the hook exits the plastic right in a centre line of the bait making it symmetrical.

dumb question....how do I rig the plastic on the jig so the stem of the hook/jig is imbeded in the plastic/gulp and only the hook shows?

I have just made up a rough info sheet on how to rig a plastic or gulp.Its a pretty easy process practice makes perfect.

One more thing pls. When I am finished all the steps the hook hangs on my line with a tilt similar to your picture in step 4...so you can imagine my plastic or bait[strip of pilchard] on the jighead but the 'u' of the hook is not down and a 'u' but sideways and a 'c' before I am ready to cast.

Any insights or is that normal ?

It sounds like you may have the leader knot tied directly at the eye of the hook s that the lure can't swing freely on it. Use a a loop knot instead that allows the lure to be less rigid on the line. See if that solves the prob. (if you're not sure how to do a loop knot, attach the lure with a clip to see if that solves it).

:eek::eek: Don't use bait mate, defeats the purpose of the jig head entirely, lures only.


Loop knot will solve your problem.. but i don't personally use loop knots, I tie my knots hard against the eye, for higher knot strength.. a slightly tilted jig head is not going to matter..

Learn this knot.It will allow the jighead to swing freely on the line
