To the gentleman (and i use that term loosely) who was seen on the river around dusk tonight in the white centre console aluminium boat travelling at warp factor 6. I hope your not a member here but if you are. I see you do not have a name on your boat, i have a suggestion for you why dont you call it FWIT after the person driving it.
There is a speed limit on the river for a reason. Its no ones fault that you dont have lights on your boat and are racing to get back to the ramp because it is getting dark.
Dont you realise that there are two rowing clubs on that section of the river and a number of other craft use it to not to mention people let their pet dogs swim in it to.
This is not the first time i have seen you do this.

Yes they do have a right to be there but so do the fisho's. If you have fished either of these river from a boat you will understand.

I have been as polite as I can and even get out of the way of these ROWERS THAT HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE THERE and just get abused.

Maybe they should go and do a sport that faces forwards and they won't run into anyone and be able to see what is coming to them.

It wasn't me (not this time anyway):p..

But the rowers are hypocrites of the highest order, they break the 5 knot limit all the time and their coaches in the little tinnies have no regard for the speed limit either, except when we overtake the rowers at around 10knots, then they wanna play the law abiding citizen role and yell the speed limit to you.

Some of them are fine, but I have had to yell out to them before they collide with my boat while I'm fishing the edges of the river under leccy power, only to be abused by them....go figure.

the trick is to trim up and sit on 10knots

So thats why rowers are always mean to me on the river for no reason. Its you young hoons swamping their boats while speeding.:)

The Melbourne Rowing Club was Founded 1862 - when you take that into consideration - Speeding breamers are a relatively new source of irritation. We are the equivalent of the "Wake Monster" (Williamstown Ferry:)) to a rowing boat - the difference is we are worse:).

Copping a lap full of water or being tipped out, would only have to happen once for me to become sensitive to boats travelling at speed.

You dont have to go out for a cafe latte with them;) - but a little respect isnt that hard:)

Yeah I've sussed that out - the little tinnies the coaches use are exempt from the speed limit - If they are keeping up with the rowing boat in front of them, they can go as fast as the big blokes with the oars:).

The problem is you have 3 choices.

1: dont overtake the rowers, problem with that is they may be just cruising along at 5 knts and you will never get to the bream in time for the right tide:D

2: overtake them at a respectable speed. which means passing at under 10 knots, sitting half on a plane and throwing a wake that would keep Brett Eisenhauer happy:cool:

3: flat stick, dont slow down, dont make eye contact and dont stop until your about 5 k's past them. Despite this option seeming the most inconsiderate, it has the least impact on the rowers, tiny flat wake, can't hear the abuse so there is no need to retaliate, and you are gone in 60 seconds.

Option 3 is one that I do not take myself although it is very tempting, especially when you have 3 or 4 row boats spread out over 500meters of the river.

Its a no win situation (for us and the rowers)

Ahh section 23 clause 1.4:cool:

I chose to consider the following guidelines.

If ya can't be good be good at it

It's only illegal if ya get caught

When in Rome, do as the ROMANIANS:D:p

Some rowers are really stupid/rude mainly the older folk.. clear river, not a boat in sight, YET they still row right near the bank where I'm flicking:mad:, having said that i had a couple young fellas heading straight for the section i was working, they took notice of me and kindly moved out into the middle :)

I have that problem in the Yarra but I'm 100% sure they arent hugging the banks to be rude to you.

It appears to be traditional rowing etiquette. I have studied these curious beasts when I am not fishing and they appear to do it whether you are there or not.

What I've noticed is - when they travel slowly up or down stream, they stick as close to the banks as possible. And they tend to use the middle of the river for going quick. If they all stuck to the middle of the river it would be chaos. Especially when half of them cant see where they are going;)

On my hit and run sessions I structure them around spots the rowers dont glide over. If you watch them long enough there are banks and bends they dont tend to run over. And they're the ones I fish;)

The rowers are here to stay, they arent going to change their patterns so you have to study their patterns and work around them. If they arent on the river - fish where ever you want - if they are - have a think about your locations.

When I first started working banks I wanted to declare Jihad on all rowers:D;)
They used to drive me freakin nuts. If I could sign a bit of paper that got rid of them I would - but when I realised that wasnt going to happen I just learnt to work around them. And my sessions have become far more relaxing;)

P.S. After typing all that out - I just did a google search on rowing etiquette and it would seem my assumptions are correct:D

• Please follow the traffic pattern at all times. Slower boats closer to the shore, faster boats and larger boats to the middle. If you are in a boat being overtaken, yield to the faster boat.

good tip there mate! thanks:)

No drama's - if only they stuck to all the etiquette like they stick to the banks - the boaters wouldnt have so many drama's

"If you are in a boat being overtaken, yield to the faster boat.":D;)

Don't know if this is related or not but I just saw this on the news and it looked like a white center console tinny.

hi guys just thought id let you no, that was me in the white centre console boat yesturday, im sorry if I upset you. But have you actually been out there when the rowers have been, The teaching boats that follow the rowers are always going over the speed limit, What are they allowed to do that because there rowers? and also have you ever seen the ferrys that travel up and down the yarra travelling at 10 kts not slowing down for any rowers, and i look when i drive if there was a dog in the water i would see it im not stupid. It was wrong of me to be speeding and its true, that is the reason why there is a speed limit. but was it really worth expressing it in such a rude and stupid way. do you feel proud "peterb59"
