What is the general feeling regarding rod length for lures and SPs?
I have a 6', 6'6" & 7' rods
Have read that the pros are going for longer rods? I am considering getting a 7'6" rod (Innovator) but still undecided.
Are longer rods beneficial?
To be honest, I can't see any real reason for going past the 7' mark.
I'm like you. 6' for close quarters HB and short cast SP fishing. 6'6" for flats, general open HB fishing and the 7' for most of my SP fishing.
Anything bigger seems a bit too big to me.
JMO.
It really depends where you are fishing.
Spad's throws a 5' 4" in close quarters, heavy timber etc. Sewelly's just made up a 4' something rod.
On the flats though a rod that gives you more casting distance will let you cover more ground.........
4' stump puller hey...... hmmmmmmm

Hiya...
So my post I was going to do about what size rod I should get for shore base fishing is answered with 7'.
What kinda action is best for shore base? By this I mean is a stiff rod better for casting SP and HB, or is something is a bit more of a shimmy in it better?
...Cheers
Shane
Hi Shane,
The 6'6" and the 7' I have are very different rods.
I would still use them for shore or boat, but have them for soft and hard body use. I still think the 6'6" is good for shore as much as the 7'. They are just very different rods.

Bah... thats not what I want to hear :p I want to hear... buy this one because every other rod isnt worth it :D
I was thinking the 7' because being 6'5" myself it would be the same as someone smaller than me using a 6'6", plus I can't cast really far on my current 6'6" as is
I have $100 to spend on a rod, and was looking at the 7' rods at BM and maybe looking around for a Okuma Avenger priced reasonably.

got to say thanx to all you guys for your comments.
Spoke to the former editor of Modern Fishing, he felt that you dont need much more than 6'6" or 7". but he said that he is hearing from the pros that longer rods are being used more and more.
Tho now way will go without my 6' when close to wharvs etc.
Maybe that extra length would be good for the flats?
Shane,
There is no such thing as 'this rod will do everything'.
As induviduals, different rods will fell differently to each person. Best thing you can do is hook up with the guys and try a few.
That's what we're here for.

Yeah kinda knew that ;)... same as when people come asking me about what is the best to buy in computer parts
Unfortunately life has conspired against me and every time I try to hook up with someone from here something crops up. I'll just grab one of those 7' rods at BM and hook it up with a nice reel. Got to be better than my Rex Hunt general purpose combo I have now :D
Sorry I can't help more Shane.
Happy hunting.

Rod,
Many people are scared when they hear the words "long rods" don't know it is about, but they just are. And many people are skeptical without even having given them a ago....
You only have to look back 2 years ago when bream spinning with plastics started to take off people were still using 5"6' rods designed for hardbodies with some sucess might i add!
I now used a Millierod that stands at 8"2' and find it extremely hard to use my other bream buster that is 6"9'. I use for viturally anything and after using it you will honestly say how did i used anything else. The advantages are there - a lot better line control when fighting a fish especially when heading into snags - allowing you to use lighter leaders/jigheads, cast extra distances, and most importantly finesse fish. You will be surprised at how comfortable it is. You don't know that your carrying the extra length and the action of the rod is amazing - the perfect, if there is such a thing, bream blank. Light tip, good strudy middle section and a powerful butt!
I find it ideal for fishing marinas being able to cast a long distance in front of you with a light jig and get the most out of your cast working the marina structure. It is also suited to bridge, pontoon, rack and pylon fishing - given its good line control. The only application where i believe it isn't suite is under a jetty where you would be pressedto use anything over a 6".
Bear has hit the nail on the head saying that there isn't one rod that can do all. Thats why many people do go out on their boats with four or five rods. If i were land based i know what wrod i'd go for - the one that can give you the most distance and best line control.
Good luck with your decision!

im with marc...
got an 8ft rod med action from tica. sturdy butt soft tip . length gives good control and leverage for hookset. casts a mile.
but when u are close to structure, trees, pilons etc, it pays to be wary... or SNAP!!

The rods I take on the boat for a competition are:
1 x 7 foot 1-3kg rod for long distance plastic-ing (or flats with hards)
1 x 6'6" 1-2kg for lighter plastics in close
1 x 6'6" 2-4kg for plastics and hards in structure
1 x 6' 2-4kg for really heavy structure work - this rod may only be rated 2-4kg but it has a very strong bottom end for putting the hurt into fish.... :)
With all these rigged ready to go I sometimes still feel undergunned, another shorter (5'6") rod in the 2-6kg bracket exclusively for hards and I'd be pretty happy.
There are times when all these rods have the same lure on the end, with different leaders.... that way I just grab the right rod for the structure.....
But then I have seen some smick 7'+ rods...... does it ever end
 :D
Cheers,
I am a big fan of the shorter rod, my rods range from 5'6"- 6'ft3", all med-fast tapers. I feel a shorter rod offers better accuracy and a quicker more effective power up on a fish.
But a month ago I had a chance to play with a high modulus graphite 8ft Bream Buster and was very surprised with it. On first impressions it looks to be a very light sloppy rod with out much guts, but nothing could be further from the truth. Put a bit of pressure on the tip and it locks up surprisingly fast and has enough power to pull a train backwards:eek:, to be honest I haven't seen a rod in excess of 7' that would even get close to it, the homework had ceratinly been done on the construction of the rod. It wasn't cheap, but it was an exceptional piece of equipment.

rodmy,
my opinion is that you have a 6' 6'6 and 7' rod so why not buy a longer rod like a 7'6 and have a rod for every situation possible, there is no point in doubling up!
im in the same situation, ive got a 5'6 trout rod and a bream collection of 6' 6'6 and 7' and a brand new 7'6 innovator nitro. this means that i have a rod for every possible situation that i may encounter.
SPEND YOUR MONEY WISELY.

head they are used in surf, how are they when fishing from a boat, some guys tell me that tornament anglers are using long rods on boats in competitions
i had a mate who fished in the gold coast comp and said that he didnt really like the 7'6" from the boat when casting to structure, he used the nitro 6'6" for this and was very pleased with it, i used the 6'6" on the yarra quite a few months back and was blown away, its simply a really good rod for the money!!!
cheers ben
