I am after a new digital camera and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or experience. Not after DSLR or anything, just a normal point and shoot type in a compact type up to about $350. About 8 to 10 megapixels, easy to use, large display and value for money (most important).

Cheers,
Nathan

Yeah I got a Canon ixis 80 (8 megapixel) a few months back for $240 and think it's great. Nice and compact, hardly even realise it's in your pocket and takes good photos too.

Yeah the IXUS are a very solid japanese built unit. Mine has taken a beating and it still takes great shots for what it is. One thing is they don't show their true potential just using them on auto. Invest in a small tripod and learn to use the manual functions. Some of the pre-sets like fireworks and snow can really make a difference also. The macro function is also great for taking close ups of new tackle purchases;)

Thanks all, I was already leaning towards the IXUS but the 95 was a bit over the price limit considering I will want more memory and a cover etc. The IXUS 80 could be a winner I think.

cheers

I have the olympus 1030, which is outside the budget but I like the waterproof bit. Mine hasn't been faultless but was fixed under warranty just took some time.

Also have a fuji not quite dslr older model. great camera excellent zoom great pictures, but not waterproof (which is a issue when your walking the milford track and get about 200mm rain on the last day).

I noticed the other day (in a Retravision shop) that Fuji have brought out a shockproof waterproof 8 or 10mp camera to rival the olympus and I think it was around the $300 - 350 mark. Didn't take a lot of notice cause I have all the camera's I need at the moment. But I would suggest its worth taking a look.

Oh yeah I bought a 2gb SD card for it as well as only comes with 20mb i think. I think that was $15.

Panasonic make a few good ones that have an awesome zoom range some rannge from 28mm to 300mm in a compact, not quite as compact as the ixus but the huge zoom can come in quite handy for other applications. Lieca lens as well

What's a good portable model for macro shots??? ideally something with an aluminium or similar exterior that can take a bit of a bash. Sick of using the mobile for pics and my digi is crap and the missus won't let me take any of her DSLR's :(

I have a fujifilm s5800. only cost about $300 but its not bad. quite large, takes 4 AA's but thats handy if you dont want to carry a charger around with you.

It has great macro settings, 10x optical zoom and the option of going full 'manual' with shutter speed, appeture, etc with good results.

only downside is it has a kinda rubbish casing but I think the new models have sorted that and have better zoom and MP capabilities.

I take a LOT of photos and use a Pentax W20 and W30 as they are good around dust and water proof. They also take good pics and are well priced. I'm eyeing off the W60 as the next upgrade.

ill back up the recommendations for the IXUS80...
after a well small rock fishing incident yesterday i found myself in the market for a new compact digital.

got one from retrovision locally for mid 200 and after playing with it while layed up on the lounge most of the night and doing a few small test shots, im extreamly happy with it...

here's 2 i took just then, first a Lime on the tree outside the workshop on standard macro no flash

whats the new model called is it still the s5800?

the model numbers seem to have changed but its the finepix 'S' series. I got mine from target on special but most places should have them.

http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/s/index.html

Here is an example of its macro, flower is about 10mm across, that is a tiny ant.

hope this helps

cheers ash
can you adjust shutter and apeture?

Hazell
28-05-2009, 04:11 AM
Yeh you can adjust everything, shutter speed, apeture, etc. they have a 'light meter' thing aswell to make sure you get the exposure right but because its digi i just go trial and error on most stuff to get it how i want it..

eg: 4 second shutter speed at night.

edit: this one did not scale down well.

Just to throw in another contender. I was looking for something that was good on the macro stuff but no so $$$ that if it took a tumble into the drink i would be devestated. I landed on the Samsung L100, it's 8.2 Megapixel with a very respectable focal range of 5cm to infinity on it's auto macro setting. Can go fully manual and has a built in light meter also.

Picked it up from Dick Smith for $135, normally $148. very light and compact so i am very happy.

Pic from the new camera now attached :D My keys never looked so cool.

Looks the goods mate!

On a side note did you encounter any large Snapper in the docks on Sunday. I dropped a thumper of the nothern side early in the morning. 3lb doesn't equal 3kg Snapper in the pylons :(

Good to hear i wasn't the only one who noticed the suckas :D good that you got on to a few youngins.

Has to be the worst feeling seeing a fish on your line knowing that it will not be yours :( knew as soon as I saw the fish in profile that I was done for. Bloody thing just sort of swam up to the top with no fuss, let me see its colour then one nice kick and *TWANG* gone. Shattered really, would have been a pb :) oh well there is alway next time.

It is just a Nikon D40, pretty cheap camera, I didn't wanna go high budget for my first SLR as I'm not all that into photography yet.
