Sorry to hijack the thread but whats everyone's opinion on the Holden Rodeo's 4x4? Getting a 4WD mid year and the rodeo dual cab 4x4 's are on my list to look at.

fishintruckie
21-02-2009, 10:36 PM
Had a bit to do with Rodeo's on the mines, the electronic 4wd seems to have more than it's share of issue's and the front hub's don't seem to handle corrugation's too well. For what they are they are as gutless as a wet paper bag! Navara's, Hilux's and Triton's leave them for dust!

Thought id whack up a few pics of my new car. Got myself a 2005 GLX Manual Pajero, 3.2 TD. Has only 107, 000 on the clock and cost me $29,990 ($23000 changeover with the mrs 2004 Holden Barina). Has all the goods side rails, bull bar and tow bar. Ive wanted a 4WD for years and after much looking for a decent diesel Pajero i finally found one. Really happy with the car, extremely comfy to drive, and for such a big diesel geez she has some go with that turbo. Just need some 4WD training now. So if there's any guys that go regular beach driving and don't mind a beginner tagging along gimme a bell. :D

Gummy Guy
15-05-2009, 02:04 AM
My advise squidgee man, i think sand driving is the extent of 4wd you should do in one of these. a mate of mine has one, i gave it a good going over. they have got heaps of low end power, but i term of it being a 4wd.... more like low clearence all wheel drive. don't thrash it if you do go any tracks Sh1t will be broken.
Good buy though - very very nice inside!

Squidgee_Man
15-05-2009, 02:11 AM
The extent of my 4WDriving will most likely always be on the beach surfing and fishing. Im not gunna do river crossings / gorges and rocky tracks, thats not for me. Im in my element on the beach!:D

palaran
15-05-2009, 05:54 AM
not sure why gummy is calling it an allwheel-drive. Definetely more than that. Not built the same as a cruiser/patrol but very capable off-road vehicle.

will suit your needs very well squidgy.
Have one and great on the sand and "other" off road applications.

sand driving is all about tyre pressure and momentum, not speed. experiment with tyre pressure and you will pick it up quickly. just choose your gear and let the engine torque to the rest. don't over-rev.

happy to show you around but live south of you.

Gazza
15-05-2009, 07:57 AM
Squidgee_man, I regularly take people out to teach them how to drive 4wd's. I do it as part of my job. If you would like to go for a drive some time, I will sit next to you and give you some tips.

Bit busy for the next few weeks, driving course this weekend, Classic next weekend and driving course in Karratha the weekend after that. If you can wait that long, shoot me a PM and we'll arrange something.

Cheers.

mate i take my ml320 on 'tracks' and i havent broken anything, and these tracks arnt just dirt roads, my car is hardly a tuf 4x4 a pajero would be 10x better than my car off road its more how drive it which dtermines what gets broken...

i think you will be pleasently suprised at what your car can do, i wasnt expecting much from mines and i was very suprised, just because its not a nissan rover or toyota dont discount its capabilities...

cheers

Cheers for that guys! i am happy with the car and cant wait to get on the beach. Ill also be at the classic next weekend gazza so if you see a couple of guys in a White 435 Hornet Trophy come over and say hi and we can T something up in a few weeks. That would be great to have some experience next to me. Ill be driving down in the Pajero.:)

Squidgee_Man
15-05-2009, 08:50 AM
Just need a question answered in relation to the 4 settings the Pajero has. Now i understand the 2H which is normal rear wheel drive for normal driving. The 4HLC and 4LLC is 4WD. I take it just normal 4WD driving you select 4HLC and if you in a spot of bother and need more torque to get through real bog you select 4LLC. But 4H is the one im a bit rough on. The manual says only use 4H and 2 H on paved roads. Now is 4H like the AWD setting? and when would i use this. Im guessing when the roads are real wet or your driving on gravel?

StuKlose
15-05-2009, 09:08 AM
Yeah you would also use 4H for most offroad work and select $l (low range) when you get stuck or when your vehicle is working really hard in 4H

palaran
15-05-2009, 09:29 AM
squidgee,
when you head out with Gazza he will teach you about 4WD windup.
it's an important aspect of 4WDing to know about.
H4 is used for most casual offroad work. just read your manual, mine says to put the shift selector into neutral position and then operate the transfer shift lever when going into 4LLc (auto).
plenty of people select a four wheel drive option in the transfer lever but if you are in neutral the car wont move.

That really is quite uneducated in my opinion. As far as 4x4's off the factory floor pajero's do well. For the last year or so the pajero has been winning 4x4 of the year in the medium sized market and that includes competition like the famous prado. I know people hate the independent suspension but the fact is that it does work. It might not get you crawling over rocks but will go most places a sane person would.

I respect the fact that we all have opinions and i'm guessing the reason behind your statement is the fact it doesn't have live suspension but to make the statement you made about sand driving is completely over the top. If you want to start talking about clearance look at a standard 200 series cruiser or even a 100 series. No better than the Paj. I'm pretty sure your not going to call a landcruiser a softroader!!!

Nice car Squidgy. Put a decent set of tires on her a bar and a lift kit and she will be a fine offroader and while everyone out there with bigger better fourby's are remorgaging their houses to pay their fuel bills you can be on some remote beach casting lures and living the life!!!!

It's amazing how mild that pic of the Coastals comp rigs rollover looks in the pics. That was an extreme stage and claimed 4 out of the 5 rollovers for the weekend leaving a 60 series completly crushed and written off.

Was an awsome comp though and was great to see so many more purpose built buggies appearing so hopefully our comp scene takes off even more.

good to see some very nice trucks around, i recently sold my cruiser due to money issues (no work, god dam economic melt down) and am looking to getting replacment. but this is what happened to my poor old truck weeks after i sold it to some young wood duck straight out of school spending dads money. did some pretty good damage to his back too after rolling twice on tracks of had driven plenty of times.

Ha! I could have waffled on about whats been done to my "Little Shiity three litre" as well but all that really matters is that it gets me where I need to go and it eats Nissans for breakfast.:D:D:D
But just for the sake of waffling, it's got a 3" dump pipe and 3" exhaust, 2" Old Man Emu suspension, Air Lockers, and ARB, Recaro, Kenwood, Redarc, Yokohama, Warn, Blah,Blah,Blah Waffle,Waffle...........zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Pretty sure he was talking about the zd30 grenade that comes in most pootrols.
