it may be a big feild but at the end of the day theres alot of places that are illegal to fish.its pretty much from the westgate bridge to the bolte bridge then to the first bridge in the nong.so there goes pretty much all the top spots to fish gone.it also will be a very intresting round with speed limits every were around the system and alot of boat traffic ferries etc.wonder if it will have a 40 boat max for this round.as it will be pretty crowded with 40 boats thru out the systems i guess we will have to wait and see untill bill puts all the dates and venues together will be looking forward to seeing it.

There is no doubt this will be an organisational nightmare for me, but to show case the sport at the boat show will be great.

40 to 50 teams max, Definite no go zones which I will clarify with the appropriate parties, speed limits. Won't be confined to Yarra and Nong as anglers can fish anywhere in Port Phillip they can get to by boat.
The breifing will be intense.
At the end of the day the success of the round will be determined by anglers following the rules to the letter and not trying to bend them in anyway. If teams try to be silly then will won't get asked back.

Still all not cleared as yet but we are getting closer.

Cheers

Hey Bill just a thought, if a team does the wrong thing disqualify them from the whole the weekend, You have told me before in depth how hard the city bream comp is to organise. so don't let some who may not like the rules bend them. they stuff up then you're out no questions.

This could be great for the Vic bream sponsors in terms of exposure and could also be the draw card for that elusive new sponsor:p:p and joe public would get to see how tournament angling works.

Do you have dates that you are trying to arrange?
Cheers Dale.

Yeah boys will be on the 31st Jan and 1st of Feb at the Summer Boat Show which is ridiculously close which is doing my head in trying to get sponsors on board for the 2009 series 8 weeks earlier than normal.

Should be huge with lots of coverage of the event. We are also starting Vic Bream TV on Channel 31 next year which will be a great first episode to start with. Even some celebs may be fishing.

But I like the VB Classics more as I can fish with someone I trust and very comfortable with.
Not like some (very rare) clowns at ABT: "Don't cast too close to my cast!" or "You stay at the back of the boat for the whole time on the water, because I am the boater and I am fishing from the front deck because I can..."

Looking forward to the Melbourne event, can't wait.

Yeah I know what you are saying in regards to the ABT thingy but I will take my chances, i believe you can catch fish from front or back it doesn't matter.

And seeing I don't have a boat:( it make's it a little harder to do more.
Although time constraints anyway with work and family life.
2 very young kids certainly takes up a lot of time. but time well spent:D:D

I agree Spiro.

I've only fished 2 VBC's and both of them 5 hours away in systems I've never seen before until the comp. Kinda makes it difficult.

But this one being in Melb where I do 90% of my fishing should make things a little easier.

While I am affiliated with the ABT my Vic Bream Classic Series is a stand alone bream series so no membership is required. I aim to encourage new people to get into the sport so you can fish one or fish them all without having to fork out for a membership

Not sure if this has been posted up elsewhere, but here goes...

Between 12th January and 9th February, the EPA will be conducting the 2009 Lower Yarra River Fish Study.

http://www.oem.vic.gov.au/2009LowerYarraRiverFishStudy

The Docklands Classic is smack bang in the middle of this period. The study includes setting nets in two or three areas, at least one of which has to be fishable during the Classic.

Fishing nets will be set in the lower Yarra River from 12 January 2009 to 9 February 2009.
Locations include:
- The Warmies near the Newport power station; and
- South Wharf in the Docklands.

If not enough fish are caught from the first two sampling areas nets will be set in the lower Maribyrnong River.

The pic below is an EPA sign from one of the areas. Probably something those fishing the comp need to be aware of.

Also wanted to state that these studies are important for monitoring the health of the rivers and its little black inhabitants, so please...no negative comments in relation to netting. Prefer that it didn't have to happen...let's leave it at that.

Ballnuts
06-01-2009, 09:36 PM
Hi Guys

No need to stress about this EPA netting. I have spoken with them at length and they won't be netting or getting in the way of anglers over the comp weekend and pre-fish day.

We may even be able to work in with them in the future to enable them to contact these studies without the use of nets at all which will be great. The response I had from the EPA was excellent.

Vic Bream Classics could potentially co-ordinate some of the bream anglers to catch bream for the future EPA studies which will ensure we can be selective of the bream that are culled and eliminate the netting protecting all those 40cm plus fish. The EPA were extremely interested in this approach.

Great work Bill,
I am surethis will help secure the future of the event in the area, big thumbs up.

Maybe there is something that all of us local fishers can assist with as well, there are enough of us now that consistently fish the yarra, nong and docks that we may be able to help.

The more catch and release anglers are incorporated into studies and working with various Governement departments the more our group will be seen as a very valuable resource in the promotion and ongoing research into recreational fishing projects.

Hi Ballnuts,

07-01-2009, 08:37 PM
Hi Mate

All competitors will recieve a breifing document prior to the comp outlining the no go zones but basically there will be no fishing between the Westgate and Boltie Bridges in the Yarra. The Maryibynong mouth anglers will only be able to start fishing the flats from a designated area which we will mark out with flags. Roughly it will be 100 metres up river from the CRS dock. All other areas such as private mariners etc that are signed with no fishing will need to be obeyed by anglers.

Hope that helps

Am I allowed to fish for Jewies with live bait land based now that were inside the two weeks?
Also if a friend (non Competitor) was fishing for bream land based can I accompany him as an observer without rod obviuosly.

No, and if you happen to drive over the Bolte/Westgate bridge you have to close your eyes.;)

Ballnuts

Hi Mate

The pre-fish ban means you can't fish in any way shape or form in the designated areas 2 weeks prior to the comp which includes jewies, landbased. As for watching your friend if you can handle the pressure of watching him fish and not fishing yourself then I guess that if fine.

My advice would be to go fish somewhere else for the small amount of time that the ban is on. It just saves other anglers questioning your honesty if they seen you on the banks of the Yarra etc.

Please call me if you want to discuss this further. I have already banned one team from entering as they fished the yarra landbased yesterday which is a no go. I keep my rules very clear and don't make exceptions that way it minimises complaints (Its not like anglers enjoy DohDohDohDohDohing about other anglers much):p

Cheers

well from my last 10 years of fishing the yarra/docks with lures , the heat of summer and lack of colour in the water makes it far more difficult to find feeding fish, we have not had rain for weeks, so it will make it very tough, the yarra and the docks are very hard in even the best conditions let alone extreams like this, to be honest i cant see many fish weighed in but i hope i'm wrong.

Fishing was tougher than yesterday and I expect it will only get tougher tommorow.

Nice going Hodges' and very well done Nick and Craig, From what I saw from work today there was a alot of movement up and down the yarra.
Hopefully tomorrow will produce better results for everyone else.
Good luck to all.
Dale.

Thanks Fellas,

the fishing was definitely tough, took us a fair while to get on the board but ended up with a nice bag. Even got to upgrade once too:eek:

Hodgey has a cracking lead over the rest of us now (760g exactly the weight of our biggest fish)

Now to wait and see what day 2 brings, gunna be fun.

If anyone here isn't doing anything tomorrow arvo around 2pm you should come down and have a look at the weigh-in. There are some awesome looking boats in the comp and on display.

Just got home from the comp.

basically team Smak That cleaned up!!!!! Well done Brad & Mike.

The boys took out 1st place, biggest bag and biggest bream.

Unfortunately Nick and I couldn't weigh in a full bag like we did yesterday but managed to hold onto 5th position. So we are extremely happy with the result, but spewing we only got 3 legals.

I'm sure others will give more details

Overall we had an awesome weekend

Kangoku Shad isn't it Crabcrusher?

Thats what it is Rodman. It seemed to work OK on the day.

This event was extremely well run, and a credit to Bill and his team at Vicbream. The amount of logistics and shmoozing that would have had to go on in the background to get the thing up and running would have been amazing.

Im sure that all who attended would agree it was a great weekend and would love to see the round return next year.

It was tough, no doubt.

Me and ruski landed only 2 fish on Saturday from the Yarra, nothing big (Dale, we should have listened to you;)).
Sunday was even worse with one fish which we didn't take to weigh-in -Paul was in a hurry to head off to Mallacoota with mates for a week of fishing:(

Well done to all participants who fought the weather and the local Yarra bream.

Well done to Hodgeys with achieving another top result on the home soil.

Oh yeah, and a big thank you to Bill and his team for organising such an event in a very difficult environment, coordinating with Melbourne Port Authority and the Boat show organisers. Great job for sure.

Cheers,
Alex

Yeah, we fished Yarra till 2:00 then handed over a key tag, released the fish and went home without going to weigh in (there was no point really with one fish).

Had a chat with Emo and Hazy on the water just before 2 pm. Probably brought them some bad luck as Hazy just dropped the fish in front of us, sorry.:D

Have to agree there. Great event. Bill and co did a fantastic job organising such a professionally ran event. Good intro to the tourny scene for myself, even if it was a tough weekend. Looking forward to a few more classics!

Yep, team name is Quantum. Struggled up the Yarra on Sat, but got fish in the 'Nong on Sunday. Did'nt weigh in though....would'nt have made a difference.

I was no good, our only saving grace was my partner caught some nice fish on both days but we finished 14th.
