Me and a couple of mates were fishing in Matilda bay just around from Royal Perth YC yesterday and found two condemed/closed down jetties. They had the first part removed and you had to wade aout about 15m to get to them. They had steps at the start of them with lengths of that orange plastic guard/restriction netting around them that road workers use to stop people walking of footpaths and that.

Anyways, in 'em were a fair few 30cm+ bream with head just big enough to poke through the gaps in the net and get their gills caught. All this just 300m down from the CALM offices. The signs on the jetties had the CALM logo on them too. Dunno if its been put up by the shire council or CALM, but what who ever put em there needs to take em down 'cos its stupid considering the loss of breeding stock bream in the Swan over the last few weeks.

I've e-mailed Conservation and Land Management, Fisheries WA and Recfish WA about it. And I say...if they're still there the next time I visit them (and I will ;) ), them i'm gonna have to perform an act of vandalismic justification. haha.

(anyone else seen these jetties?)

P.S., yes I know, we wouldn't of found em if we didn't walk onto the jetties with the big NO ACCESS PERMITTED FOR YOU OWN SAFTEY signs.

Id rip them all down myself and drop them on the Fisheries doorstep. Disappointing to see.

Yeah its seems a little bizarre
the fencing around the jettys was fairly secure but i guess on a high enough tide the bream would be searching for food around the jettys and end up trapped in the mesh

I did release a few still free swimmin in there
but had to extract one from the mesh caught near its gills
he had a little blood but it didnt seem to be coming from the gills
he swam off all ok but another one had unfortunately not been so lucky

I dont think it was a silly act by them
I just think it wasnt really thought about before they were put them up. I found it pretty bizarre when i saw them and thort they must have been fish from the fish kill. Anyways If your fishing the area just give em a check and make sure none are in there
Cheers

I dont understand exactly what you mean? is the orange barrier stuff trapping the bream?

Hi Matt

yes the orange stuff is trapping them
the kinda orange plastic net stuff u see on some road works

the holes in the plastic barrier fit perfectly around the head/gills of the bream. From wot i could gather they were getting in there on a high tide or some other way im not sure of. And then trying to escape through the gaps and only succeeding in getting themselves trapped. There was 2 others swimming around in there that escaped when i lifted the net up a bit to get to the stuck ones.

P.S. THEY CALLED ME "Mr."!!!! No ones ever called me that without adding, "Get out!" or "You're making a scene" after it! WOO HOO!..I was fishing for a "Sir", but I guess I was expecting too much. I'll keep yas up to date with any other replies from CALM or Rec Fish.

Evan,

Fishing was a bit patchy there. One or two...looks promising though. Only there for an hour or so.

Just lett'n yas know...they've removed the orange net things completely now.

Went there again a couple of days ago and the bream gods smiled upon me. Giving me a P.B. from the very same jetties. Also was my fisrt sized bream on River2Sea's as well....I was stoked.

So yeah, go me and the people who removed the nets!

Heres the latest e-mail I recieved back from DohDohDoh...Dear Mr Healey

I refer to your recent email regarding net in the Swan River at Matilda Bay
and the subsequent capture of a number of black bream. Your compliant was
investigated by Officers from the Fremantle Fisheries Office who have
reported that the orange plastic netting was placed around the pilons on the
condemned swimming baths by CALM. CALM were notifed of the problem and the
mesh has been removed. For your information. Thank you for bringing this to
our attention. Regards

well done mate

I've past those jetties with fly rod in hand for 'greener' waters, but i've no doubt that whole section holds bream, particularly on dusk.

Does anyone know if those jetties are to be rebuilt?

I dunno, but just walk on em anyway. I've seen plenty worse ones that aren't condemned.
