View Full Version : Fly Colour Vs. Lure Colour

Just a quick one for fellow tiers and flickers.
Most successful lures, soft plastics seem to be natural tones (motoroil, avacado etc) whereas a lot of the bream flies seem to be flasy, or have some element of flash.
I know the answer is probably to have an assortment of each, but was wondering if others seem to prefer one over the other?
Cheers

Read Kim Bain's article in the new DohDohDoh... The Jellybean Theory. Might give you some good insight to it

hey Justin
in the past two weeks I've been tying gotchas in a variety of colours and have had a fair bit of success around the local flats.
As for flash
for ribbing i'm using maxibraid which has sparkle through it, but not overly-done.
After tying on the wing (polarfibre) I'm tying in about six strands of krystal flash.
So it's not an overly flashy profile, and therefore isnt an attractor fly.
I have tried using smaller versions of the meldrum clouser (a true attractor fly... all flash) but haven't had notable success, although others obviously have caught some BIG bream at night using them.
At the end of the day though, i think its pesonal preference. I like all the natural colours, but hey, im yet to get one over 35cm on fly yet.... :)
