I am interested in getting into kayak fishing - targeting mainly black bream, flathead (& possibly even mulloway) ect in the South Coast inlets & rivers of WA.
As a reasonably mature guy who is seriously into fishing I'm looking for a bit of comfort that is not going to 'do the back in' too much and I would be interested to hear any opinions on what to look out for & which kayak to buy from those already into this sport.
Cheers mbp

hi mbp,

depending on how much you want to spend, i would seriously have a look at the hobie range of kayaks. i have a hobie outback and its the ducks nuts. heaps of storage space and compartments for all my gear, very stable on the water and easy to peddle and manoevre and as for your back they have a adjustable padded seat. they retail for just under $2300.00. with the peddle system it lets me fish virtually hands free and not having to constantly pick up a paddle and put the rod down.

cheers
mike.

The best advice I can give you is to go and ask the same question on the Australian Kayak Fishing Forum. I am sure there are a few guys on Breammaster that could help you, but there is more on AKFF. The kayakers on BM are probably also on AKFF anyway.

Have fun.

I have a viking tempo fisherman II and it''s been great!
Ours has a 40 pound electric on the back and it's a breeze holding position whilst fishing, plus it saves the back on the trip home.

...always thought yakkers were a really wierd collective...like cyclists and collingwood fans:p...but gettin a yak myself's totally altered my perception...:D

...the yakkin sites are great for pinchin' ideas without having any personal input:o,:p tho, if i got a critisism (without being a member..or knowing any members..and putting the most important aspects aside...fishing and socialisin') its that they seem geared a bit more towards whats cool in yakkin...every other member has..or wants...the current most popular 2 or 3 yaks goin around decked out with so many mods that its hardly a kayak anymore...thats cool, I live with the Hobie catalogue within arms reach at work, thats a yak I want for fishin like every second member on them yakkin sites;)...but a styrofoam box 'd make as good a fishin platform as any...and its been done;)

...if ya can catch fish, you can easily do it outta a $200-300yak with a rod lying on ya lap and a tackle bag no larger than the average collingwood supporters brain...i'd lash out that $100 or so for a decent seat tho...

Thanks for the ideas guys - the 'Yak' forum sounds like the go for more info however the pedal power of the Hobie is particularly appealing. ATM I'm after a bit of fittness as well so electric power would defeat that purpose .
I do like Gez's idea with the styrofoam box - maybe I could hollow out the middle and keep the 'coldies' happening at the same time - (Sounds like something a Collingwood supporter would come up with and would'nt help with the fittness much - Ha ha!)
Cheers mbp
