Correct battery amps

G'day all,

The kota's mounted, now all i need is the deep cylce, and im all set for walpole.

From what i can gather, im gunna need 100+ amp hours in my battery.

Im running a 55lb thrust kota on a 4.5m boat.

If any of u guys could let me know what ur using, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I believe they are Korean, try and get one that has it's own venting system so you don't have to take the caps off every time you charge it.

Along the same lines, I have picked up my Motorguide and was wondering if for a short period of time (a day or 2) is it feasable to use a normal marine battery until I get a deep cycle?

I do, Bubba. Don't expect too much from the battery, but it won't do any damage to the motor at least. At best, I get about 2 to 3 hours of casual use with my Kota on a 3.75m Edge Punt.

yep thats right ;) as Geoff said a Delkor. Totally maintenance free and on my AT36 Kota cable steer I get 2-3 days solid fishing, I have never run it totally flat. It is a 100 amp hour deep cycle and will set you back $190-200 . I know that may seem expensive but you get good reliable performance. The Technical aspect of the Delkor batteries are great. I had them recommended to me by Roly Waters at Racetune. Roly knows his stuff and told me that these batteries don't fall apart under hard use like rallying or track racing. Thus they are good in boats because they can survive the vibration of pounding over choppy water. Full details here:

I only use a 3amp charger which is fine for an overnight charge especially since it owes me nothing and the battery never goes flat. I actually bought it for charging car batteries back in 1982. A new wizz bang 8amp fast charger will set you back big $. The important thing is to have an auto cutout so it won't keep trying to pump amps into the battery once it's fully charged.

A 3amp charger is not sufficent for a battery that is rated at 100amps. YOu could leave it for days charger and you will not fully charge the battery to its capacity - thats not how they work. As a rule of thumb you should get a charger that is 10% of your battery size. A lot of people go out and spend hundreds of dollars on batterys only to skimp out on their charger:confused: If you want to take care of then get a decent charger. It may even void your warranty on some batteries if you underpower them. Deep Cycles, wet or sealed, also require a different sort of charger.

and of course they plug the brand that they sell. When I purchased the battery it was recomended that I also take
one of the 8amp chargers but I didn't have the $ so I do plan to
get one, just not quite yet. Interestingly the battery only draws a full load from my current charger for a matter of minutes ie: 3amps and then steadily declines to a fraction of an amp or nothing by morning. Can you explain what is happening?
I was told that the last few % of a charge will take forever and
in all likelyhood the battery will hold say 95% of it's ah capacity but never 100%
