Hi Guys and Gals

First of all let me say what a great site. The amount of information flying around these boards is unbeliveable. I have got so much reading to do I don't know when I am going to find time to go fishing :D (joking of course)

I am just in the middle of building a light weight spin stick on an extended Samuri S001 and I am looking for a reel that is suited to fishing 1kg line.

In the past I have used a Piniacle Deadbolt 15 and it was excellent, but unfortunatley they are no longer available. I have also used a Diawa Regal Z but it was unsuitable because the correct drag setting was always half way between 2 clicks on the drag adjustment.

I have found that reels with small or no clicks on the drag adjustment are required to get the correct drag setting when fishing such light lines.

I am looking at a budget of around $250 -$300. Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance

Cheers

I've just recently bought a new Stradic 1000 and I'm very impressed with it. It will handle light lines, is a smaller body size than the equivalent daiwa's and you should be able to pick one up for around 250.

Stradic 1000FH is the lightest of the small reels and handles fine line very well due to the new super slow oscillation feature. Would go v. well on a S001. I'm playing with mine now and it has very fine adjustments in the drag knob. If you could afford it, jump up to the new Sustain 1000FD which has a fantastic drag system ideal for 1kg.

I'd also suggest the Capricorn 1500 but the Stradic's just a touch lighter.

The current Daiwas have a micro-adjustable drag, Capricorn, Laguna, etc in a 1500 size would probably work for your application.

Thanks Guys

The Stradic does seem to be the popular choice.

I have also been looking at the Daiwa Team Daiwa S Reel. They are a little bit out of my price range but I could probably stretch the buget to $350 if I had to. I just have to sneek it past the boss.

Someone also suggested importing a Biomaster 1000 from Japan, but I have a bit of a problem buy a reel that I have never held. There is also the warranty issue.

Does anyone have a Biomaster that they have imported? has anyone had any experience importing reels from Japan?

Thanks again

Jethro :p

(are you still after a spinning reel?) if you are, a great light weight bream spinning reel is the shimano biomaster 1000 its the way to go, theyre super smooth winding and are designed for fireline, but beware they are pricey,
$499.95 but youll never buy another spinning reel.

Mate if your in the market for a biomaster, have a chat to Evan of this site. Send him a PM. He may have one from japan. He did have one for sale a lil while back.

Have a look at the Tica Libra, very good value, considering it has 10 ball bearings with similar weight to the Stradic and retails for about $180. The Stradic is about $60 dearer and only has 4 ball bearings I think. Has anyone tried the Tica?

Nice work Peter... yeah that is the ridiculous price of a certain store over east! You're gonna love the reel though, especially since you got a great deal! :D

If you look at the ABT forum (www.bream.com.au) and under BREAM and BASS announcements there is a post from The Compleat Angler in Melb selling Biomasters etc.

then you also look and find that these are the Mg ones which are useless for salt water as they rust really easily

Fergo - I did end up getting a Biomaster 1000 but paid less than half that. They are a top little reel but I don't know if they are worth 500 clams.

Thanks any way

Hi Jethro

I think the high costs are for the Magnesium alloy rotor version with the shallow cold-forged spool. The standard Biomaster has a RRP of ~$330. I reckon $500 is abit steep for a biomaster that cannot be used for salt water use. But it could be used in brackish water. The Mg alloy rotor has a corrosion proof coating on it, but it'll eventaully wear out.
With your budget, I say check out Evan for anymore 'standard' biomaster or get a local FD Stradic. Their both excellent reels.
By the way, if U order a biomaster, can U option the shallow spool??

i regularly fish 1-2kg off a daiwa capricorn 1500 or tds 2000 with no problems.

when i was looking for a light line reel the stratic seemed like a good choice however, after looking around the net there is some debate / problems discussed, on various boards, that the bail setup on the stradic is cutting light lines.....could be worth investigating further???

ps. theres a shootout comparision of the capricor and stratica at
