WA BREAM CLASSIC SERIES…ROUND 2
The heavens opened up big time, sending down a deluge on Perth during the morning of Saturday April 5, the day before the second round of the WA Bream Classic Series. There was relief all round when Sunday morning turned out fine with light winds and the big decision facing the 38 competing teams was where to go… chance the long run upstream into almost certain dirty water, or stay down in the middle and lower reaches, where conditions were still crystal clear.
As it turned out, staying down was probably the better option and no one came to appreciate that more than Paul McCullough and George McCarthy of Team Mac Attack. The pair started out at The Narrows and watched as several other boats plugged away around the pylons before moving on to what they hoped would be greener pastures. The Macs hung in there. George had enjoyed some good fishing in recent times along the southern shore shallows and when a big bait school started to come under harassment they zoomed in on the action and were soon hooking fish after fish, culminating in George landing a beautiful 39.5cm blackie that was later to pull the scales down to 1.48kg. They were able to upgrade several times and fronted the weigh-in with a winning bag of 3.13kg.
At the weigh-in, George was wearing his heart on his sleeve, absolutely rapt at landing his PB and overwhelmed at taking out the $400 for the biggest fish, not to mention the almost $6000 worth of Engel gear donated by Midland Gun Mart and Tackle that he and Paul shared for the heaviest bag.
Five bags were weighed that went 2kg or more and 74 fish made it to the scales before being released back into the Swan, just short of one per angler. Organisers were delighted to note that 17 bags went 1kg or better and 26 out of the 38 teams had something to show for their efforts.
Ashley Neale, who was fishing with Paul Randall as Team Mandurah Tackle Mart, made the day of one young member of the crowd watching the weigh-in, when he handed the random prize draw rod and reel he had won over to the lucky youngster. The crowd liked that one!
As usual there were plenty of tales of woe and near misses, particularly from those who decided to live dangerously and toss lures into the timber under Canning Bridge. Jarrod Colvin from Team Gibsenip got “smoked” three times in succession and he wasn’t alone in suffering that fate.
David Beer and Graham Green from Team Perth Roofing Co were runners-up with a bag of four fish that went 2.55kg, while Steven Morrison and Tim Stuart from Team Does Your Dog Fish Too had to settle for third when their bag of four went 2.4kg. Richard and Michael Fitzgerald from Team Engel weren’t far behind with four fish for 2.23kg, followed by Richard Williams and Don Johnson from Team Nitro with four fish for 2kg even.
Stuart Parks and Dean Johnson from Team Latecomers obviously take their team name seriously, managing to be last to start, last to finish and weigh in the lightest scoring bag. Consistent form guys, you’ve got to respect that.
The second round of the WA Bream Classic Series turned out to be a rip roaring success, which just goes to show what can happen when good tides, good weather and good fishing skill all come together.

Congratulations guys, the Narrows comes good again...... a really good bag as well.
cheers
Ahh another face to a name, did not realise that it was you Macca. Well done guys on a cracking bag of fish. That was a very humble speech you gave George but don't sell yourself short. Being in the right place at the right time may help but at the end of day you still have to catch the fish. Congrats on your new PB and a fine win on what seemed to be a fairly tough day for a lot of the anglers.
Cheers, Dror
We didnt do it on the day, but Id like to say a big thankyou to Craig and Dave for organizing the events and the sponsors for putting up such top notch prizes. Plus a heap of random goodies at the end.
Thanks again.
Looking forward to the Murray now.
