G'Day bream freaks, after much clinical testing on the swan I can confidently say that the GARLIC flavoured spray on cooking oil by "always fresh" or some other brand, which is sold by woolies( and the other big names, I'm just not 100%) for around $3 a can WILL improve your hookup rate compared to using plastics without any scent at all.
Spray it on liberally every five or so casts, or save it for dead periods to add something extra to your baits. I used it on a large varity of colours and plastics with no adverse affects to the lure it self i.e. eating away at the lure over time, making colours run or even discolouration was minimal on lite white sp's, and being an oil based product it naturally repels water which will let the scent last longer.
Tight Lines
PS use common sense when trying it out on your sp's for the first time,i.e. do them one at a time, watch for any adverse effects.

I was talking about this subject with my fishing compadre just yesterday. We were thinking about soaking a selection in fish sauce - which is basically essence of anchovie.

Mmmmm Thai style softies :D

And I just went and spent $19.00 on a bottle of Craw-Dad flavoured scent. Back it goes......

My tube of Halco fish sent split open, so I squeezed it into a small caviar jar and added one crushed garlic clove and a table spoon of salt. I hope the garlic is being proserved and I have thought of also adding aniseed to my recipe.

Tuna oil from your tackle shop $6 for 500ml and aniseed essence concentrate from the supermarket cake ingredients section $2 50ml. $2 for a syringe from the chemist.
I'm not sure how I feel about scenting a lure:confused: .
Seems like cheating somehow:( . Does anyone have the number for plastic purists anonymous:D

I think Spike it has acetone in it to 'melt' the scent into the soft plastic. You could try putting a little nail polish remover (also acetone) into your cheaper scent for a similar effect.

Try dipping them in a glass of sambuca or ouzo foe the aniseed flavour - of course it might be interesting on those cold mornings to........dip SP ...............drink..................dip SP...........drink...............oh dear headache coming up

Thanks Panger for that acetone idea. I bought a bottle of aniseed essence from BIGW for $3 and was thinking of how to impregnate it into the SP. Going to give it a berl!:)

Dave,
let me know how you go with the acetone. I've been meaning to try my idea byt haven't got around to it yet. Not sure how much acetone is needed. Probably you should just add a bit at a time and see how the scent takes to plastic. If you but too much the plastic will probably warp or split.

Bloody hell - Tuna oil, caviar..... Why not just just put a prawn on the jighead.

Where do you draw the line guys?

That is pretty much what the Americans have been doing for years, they use pork rind and call it "Jig'n'Pig" :-)

Pork rind is legal in US bass comps. Wonder if it would be legal in one of our's considering the rules are pretty much based on the US.

Tuna oil and DohDohDohDoh like that is banned from ABT Tournaments. The rule is nothing living or dead.

Why not just buy some Spike It, which has been extensively tested on Australian fish. Spike It just won every bass and bream tournament on the east coast in the last year…..

i thought that for $3.70, that 'always fresh' garlic spray was worth a shot.

I proceded to get flogged 0-10 fish by evan.

so it didnt have the best results for me,

although, it may not have been the garlic spray scaring off the the fish,...... i did eat a banana before fishing, so it could have been that

but anyway, i reckon the garlic spray is worth another shot.....

and if it fails, it will just end up in the kitchen..

But garlic was once living  so if you extract the essence of garlic, how does that differ from extracting the essence of anything else, such as anchovie or tuna? so long as it's a commercially available scent?

Cheers,
Gab.

P.S. Are you by any chance sponsored by the makers or distributors of 'Spike-It' ?

I agree with Fishaholic there. All oils are extracted from things that were ones living...hell...I just finished a biotechnology unit at uni and learnt that plastics were derived from biological (living) forms as well.

Does the rule really mean nothing that's immidiatly dead or alive? In other words, things that are secondary forms such as extracts from something dead are ok? If extracts from garlic are ok cos they were just plants, not animals, then what about using those flowers that smell like rotten meat?
