Siglon Leader / Flurocarbon pointers

Hey all,

I just bought myself some Siglon leader material in the 8lb - first quality leader material I've bought. I'm amazed by the thin diameter of the line. It looks like wonderful stuff.

This is the first time I've used flurocarbon, having only really used cheapish mono in the past for leaders.

As a simple join to my fireline, just a double-uni knot? It looks good... anything particular I should keep in mind with tying knots with the flurocarbon?

Also, recommended leader length with the flurocarbon? About rod length?

Is there anything that can be done to minimise the amount of leader lobbed off with each lure change? I like loop knots, and would prefer them to clips... but perhaps the leader ending in a small, plastic ring, and then a loop tied through the ring and eye of the lure? I'm not really talking snag territory... more weedbed, open water type fishing where the leader should last a little longer.

Hi, mate if you like siglon, then give Stren a try you will love it but be careful when pulling you knots tight it's deadly om the fingers lol.

Just make sure you wet the uni knot before pulling it tight, the old gob spit will do ;)
Usually a rod length is good for your leader, I go a bit more sometimes coz of bad knot tying :(

I agree, atleast a rod length of leader but keep the knot section off the spool when casting orelse you will get knots like me

you may have read this thread here (http://www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1316&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) discussing the flouros. Seems some brands have issues with knot strength (maybe from being too stiff??? creating micro cracks).
The one you mentioned sounds OK though. Perhaps some extra turns for mainline and leader when tying a uni-join would be advisable +/- supaglue.
Report back how you find it - i'm yet to be totally convinced, although the evidence is mounting ;)

Geoff Wilson conducted some tests in braid and/or Fused GSP and found that superglues actually reduced knot strenth.

I would choose a knot that is appropriate for the materials being tied and prcatice it till I could do it well and avoid things like cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Hi Chris, mate Iv been using Stren flurocarbon for about 5 years now, mainly on barra, and have had no problems with it, I find I can use a much lighter leader with Stren, example I only use 17lb for all my barra and jack fishing up north, I also find the Stren stands up very well to snags, rocks and other nasties.

I only use two types of knots for my doubles and leader, a Cairns Quickie for the double (spider hitch) and a deckies knot for joining leader to double, I use the same number of twists ect when using fire line or mono, have never had one come apart in five years.
