"Out right refussel"

G'day fella's

just thought that i would start this forum up in the hard body refusal department.......

now we all like to hear about success, but us mear mortals get knock back by the odd bream or two........especially the biggy's

so if you guys want to admit that, you've poloroided bream swimming behend your lure and just when u thought he was going to take it ..............doh doh .......no go .......now thats not right .........???

what i want to know is - why they refussed your hard bodies???

now all we can do is speculate, but thats a start .........

the reason i write this is today at low tide i got the oppunity to fish sum floating docks......(off them), i had a 35mm sneaker scorpion in bleeding mullet pattern on (a rather natural colour - i thought - for reasonably clear water), and although bream, even large ones of approx. 35/40 cm or more ran looking at the lure the didn't take it 'refussing it' at the last moment .........Why ???

My theory is that one guy (that followed it for at least 5m -from what i saw), saw me...... i feel we locked eyes for a moment as we were literally 2m apart...... as he stoped so did my retrieve and i stood frooze, not allowing the lure to wriggle at all...!!!
It slowly rose to the surface (as all good sneakers do!) and like a flash fishy was gone, as if he was never there......(he was i didn't imagin him --hehe)

phase two--what to do now ......change colour?.......change lure?.......throw another cast? (in hope)..........give up? (never!)

so if there's a lesson in all of this, please share your more frustrating moments and we'll try to figure the nocks and crannies of them out ..............."to get a better result"

Drew, the thing that has worked best for me when bream follow an HB without striking is just to leave it still in the water.

A typical scenario is a bream will follow the lure with its nose right up its bum but won't take it. When you see the fish, just stop the lure dead. With a lure like the sneaky scorp it will pretty much just sit there in the water. At this point, the bream will probably eye off the lure for a few seconds before either taking it or swiming away.

If it does swim away, don't take the lure away just yet. I've often seen them swim away and then come back a second later and slam the lure.

If the lure rises too fast, this technique won't work, they seem to ignore it if it's on the surface.

Try this and see if it helps. When the fish are doing this, resist the urge to strike the fish or wind faster, that will definately not work and will just scare them most of the time.

Unfortunately, doing this won't help every time. If you still get a refusal, it's probably a good idea to change lure colours or sizes and try again.

Ive seen quite a few times beam that follow the lure then look straight up at you turn and wander away. I know someone had one nearly hit the boat he was that intent on following the lure, turning and wandering away only a ft from the boat. But there is no reason though why you can`t continue to work that spot and still get the fish.

It is mind blowing and shattering watching a honking fish follow your lure, then the pressure mounts as you try to slow it and stick it back up its nose, the jitters come on, the mental focus goes to about 1000%, sweat starts to form on the brow, then he looks you in the eye, and says G`Day what you up to - and buggers off.

God breamin is awesome, especially when they do think thats mine and grab it and take off for cover. :)

I agree with Jimi about leaving the lure there, even if the fish has turned away. I had an experience where i sight casted a SP to a big bream. The bugger eyed it off, then turned down to deeper water! I looked away for a split second, only to turn my head back and see the fish slam it from underneath! Patience is the key. I now leave the lure still if i get a hit, or see the fish eyeing off my lure!
