I would use them where small crabs are likely, near snaggy timber, rocks, jety pylons, etc. Typically that would be in areas close to shore and wouldn't need to be cast a mile. Dropping them straight down into close in areas should be easy, either unweighted or with a split shot on the line/leader above them.

Drew,
Is that a fly version? It looks pretty sweet!
Geoff P and myself were discussing this the other day in the shop the only ones we could think of were ECO minitanks and those crappy spiders. In the Bream Bible, Bushy's uses a ?hard plastic crab to good effect - I've used live ones in the past , as pw says above, drop em into structure - along pylons seems to be the most productive for me. With an imitation i'd just give it a little tweak now and then.
If you're making those yourself you could start by crimping some small splitshot onto the hook shank before construction.

I've been using the Mini-Tank, with the tail cut off, as a crab imitation for a while now and I think it does the job - it catches fish at least.
I rig it unweighted, with a number 10 Gamakatsu Fly hook going sideways across the plastic - give it a go :)
